Onanjestad (from the Dutch, meaning Orangetown) is the capital and largest city in Aruba. Due to the high tourist trade, recent years have seen the addition of more hotels, boutiques, resorts and of course, casinos. Prominent shopping areas include Royal Plaza and Renaissance Marketplace. If you’re staying back on the mainland, spend some time checking out colonial architecture or historical sites like Fort Zoutman and Willem III Tower. For day trips, book a glass-bottom boat tour or go horseback riding. For lazy afternoon strolls head to Wilhelmina Park. If you’re more athletically inclined, take part in any number of water parts or just relax on one of the white sand beaches, one of the major draws to Aruba.

Where you plan on staying really depends on who you’re traveling with. If you’re a single or couple, you may prefer the adults-only (18+) Renaissance Marina Hotel. Rooms come with the expected amenities like wi-fi and cable tv, There are also on-site restaurants and lounges as well as meeting and conference rooms.

Dining

There are 15 restaurants scattered across the resort island as well as an abundance back in town. Where you eat really depends on where you’re staying or what you’re craving. For steaks complemented by an international wine list, try L.G. Smith’s Steak & Chop house. For light fare choose either Aquarius or Sole. Breakfast buffets can be found at Captain’s Corner. For outdoor dining, head over Papagayo Bar and Grill. There’s several eateries about Oranjestad, ranging in cuisine from international to Caribbean and can accommodate most budgets.

Entertainment/Nightlife

For night life, there’s two casinos and several bars on the island such as American with its live entertainment, The Lounge, Midnight Grill and Blue, with their signature blue martinis. For day trips book a glass-bottom boat tour, go horseback riding, visit Fort Zoutman, go shopping at one of the malls or marketplaces or check out the butterfly farm. Walk around spacious Queen Wilhelmina Park. Take advantage of all the beaches in the area, like Eagle and Palm Beach, or the island’s private Iguana and Flamingo Beach. Take part in swimming, snorkeling, scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, sailing or enjoying moonlit strolls. Play a round at Tierra Del Sol Golf & Country Club. Watch daily iguana feedings on the Renaissance Island family beach. For kids ask about the resort’s Patamingo Kids Club.
