Casino de Barbazan

With 24 rural municipalities, the township of Barbazan is where you go when you’re most interested in that ‘rural’ or ‘country’ feel, with its wooded areas, fishing and lakes. It’s also what could be considered ‘bear country’. The village of Barbazan lies on the western edge of a 62000 acre forest (the Forest of Fontainebleau). Tourism has gained a foothold as evidenced by the souvenir shops and art galleries. Stroll along Lake Barbazan, with its glacial origins, ideal for picnic lunches along with trout fishing. Mountain hiking trails can be found nearby. Come during July (the 14th) and enjoy the fireworks. For the best trout fishing, try along the Garonne. More fishing, along with hunting, can be found in Loures Barousse, also with churches and chapels dating back to the 15th and 16th century, and the remains of the village of Adignacet and the Counts of Comminges castle.

The casino offers a fleet of 50 classic and video slot machines and video poker terminals coming in various denominations. For table games, try Ball 2000 (1 table) with its 1 EUR minimum bet. Part of the Vikings Casinos Group, Casino Barbazan opened its doors in 2002, and runs daily from 10 am. On site you can find both a restaurant and piano bar.

The casino invites you to dine from Tuesday noon through to Saturday on rich and creative dishes, or arrange for banquet meals using their new showroom able to accommodate up to 80 people. Other venues include Le Relais de Barbazon, L’Ermitage Saint Antoine, La Cle d’Or, and Hotellerie du Bas-Breau.

Find your favourite cocktails in the casino bar, open Tuesday through Saturday. Look for piano music and themed nights such as ‘weekend western’ and ‘weekend cabaret’. Other nearby venues include Danmarie les Lys, Aussie Bar and Bistrot Sud. Various outdoor activities include trout fishing, hunting, canoeing, mountain hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. Visit assorted scenic areas like Lake Barbazan for fishing and picnics, the Barousse Valley, with its hunting, fishing, churches and ancient ruins, and the century spa, dating back to 1901, with its 4 hectare park. Religious sites include Saint Bertrand de Comminges, with its Romanesque/Gothic cathedral and 2000 year old archaeological site (look for the Festival du Comminges in July/August) and the Basilica of Saint Just Valcabrere, dating back to the 12th century.
