Located in northern France in the department of Pas-de-Calais, is the major ferry port of Calais. It is, by far, the largest city in Pas-de-Calais and capital of the department. The population is around a quarter of a million people, so you shouldn’t have any problems finding accommodations, restaurants and attractions to keep you busy. Head into Calais-Nord, or old-town, an artificial island with canals and harbours. To the south, south-west, is the newer part of the city, St Pierre. Besides a ferry port, Calais is also a large fishing port, so this would be a good time to sample various seafood dishes which may include lobster, oysters and crab. Try the Emile Fournier et Fils, a fish market, with its salmon, trout, halibut and herring.

Gaming

The casino offers 90 classic and video slot machines with denominations starting as low as one cent, going up to $2. Video poker ranges from 50 cents to $2. Try one of the multi-site slots, Megapot, for added thrills. The casino is open from Sunday to Wednesday, 10 am to 2 am, and Thursday through Saturday, 10 am to 3 am. Table games are open Mon-Wed 8 pm to 2 am, Thurs-Sat, 8 pm to 3 am, and Sundays 5 pm to 2 am.

Hotel/Accommodations

There are no hotels on site. At just 0.1 km from the casino you can find the Holiday Inn Calais. They offer 63 rooms with air conditioning, satellite tv, complimentary tea and coffee and free wireless internet access. The hotel is conveniently located 5 km from the Eurotunnel Terminal, 2 km from the Calais Ferry Port, and steps from the beaches and shopping. Calais Town Hall, with its gardens and sculptures is also nearby. Business guests can take advantage of their 4 meeting rooms and business centre. Guests can find breakfast buffets on site and their lobby bar is open until midnight.

Dining

Grab your breakfast buffet back at the hotel before starting your day. Their restaurant also serves lunches and dinners and guests can enjoy room service from 7 am to 11 pm. For refined cuisine and formulaic meals try La Brasserie. Head into town scouting out local venues ranging from quick eats to fine dining. Sample authentic French cuisine and be sure to try the various seafood dishes available. Ask hotel or casino staff to point you in the direction of places popular with locals and tourists.

Attractions/NightLife

Come night fall, head into the city for some drinks and dancing. Try Le Temple Discotheque or Le Moulin a Biere. To chat up locals try the Black Bull Pub. For wine and spirits, try Le Bar a Vins. For karaoke, there’s Bar Karaoke le KVO. For culture and history, try the Musee des Beaux-Arts et de la Dentelle de Calais, Fort Risban, besieged by the English back in 1346 and restored to France in 1596, The Citadel, built in 1560, a former medieval castle, the Tour du Guet, dating back to 1229, and the Calais Lighthouse, built in 1848, standing at 55 metres high. Other attractions include Hotel de Ville, the town centre, with its 74 metre high clock tower and belfry, and the Eglise de Notre Dame, a 13th century cathedral.
