Casino de Dunkerque

Dunkerque is a French commune located in the department of Nord and has a population between 90 and 100 thousand people. As part of a larger metropolitan area, it would have a population of about 200,000. Originally a simple fishing village, the city got its name from the Flemish 'duun-kerke’ meaning ‘dune church’ due to the chapel built there to evangelize the region. Sports are a popular pastime here and the two leading clubs are the Dunkerque Grand Littoral Handball and the Basketball Club Littoral. If you’re here between January and March look for the Carnival of Dunkerque and join in the celebrations. If you’re traveling with family, spend the day at Marine Park, with its children’s playground and bandstand. Castle Park is another great destination, as is Malo Park with its aquarium.

Attractions/NightLife

Find all your favourite cocktails in the jungle-themed casino bar Kipling’s Bar Lounge. Look for live music every Friday and Saturday night. Other bars in the area include L’Estaminet Flamand, and Le Tormore. For teas, coffees and desserts, try Aux Droigts de Jean Bart. There’s several attractions throughout the city worth visiting. Try the Risban Lighthouse, the anchored historical 3-masted ships the Duchess Anne and Sandettie, the Braeke dike, the 15th century Belfry, built in 1440, replacing a 100 AD watchtower, the Tour Leughenaer, part of the Burgandy fortifications from 1406, Marine Park, Castle Park, Malo Park, the Sculpture Gardens, Wind Park, Port Museum and Fort Petite-Synthe. Other areas of interest include Place Promenade, the dam, canals and beaches. Religious sites include the Chapel of Our Lady of the Dunes, Notre-Dame-les-Dunes (15th century), and Saint Eloi Church (16th century).
