Casino Barriere Royan

Royan is a town located in south-western France in the department of Charente-Maritime and the region of Poitou-Charentes. Locals are called Royan or Royanaises. The area is a seaside resort, home to five sandy beaches on the Atlantic coast. The marina can hold 1000 boats and boasts an active fishing port. This popular tourist destination sees upward of 90,000 visitors each summer. For a bit of local history, visit the Royan Museum, rebuilt as recent as 2004 over the original which dated back to 1885. To grab souvenirs or pick up supplies, head to the Central Market, open Tuesday through Sunday, from 7 am to 1 pm including holidays. During summers, it's open 7 days a week. To take in some of the indigenous flora, head to the Park Gardens of the World, with its 7.5 hectares of space situated on the edge of the marshes of Pousseau.

The La Terrasse du Casino lets you enjoy your meals as you look across the sea. Try the Atlantic Restaurant, serving lunch and dinner, also providing stunning sea-views. Head into town looking for various venues serving up classic French cuisine. Popular to the area, are oysters, mussels, lobster, and sardine Royan. Local specialties include quail Pineau chowder, escargot and fried eel. Be sure to sample some regional wine from Charentais wine-country.

Attractions/NightLife

Local bars and clubs include O Bar, Xoban and Koud a Koud. Visit Fort Boyard, once a prison before being decommissioned back in 1913. If traveling with family, there’s the Palmyre Zoo, a 3 hectare space housing such animals as chimpanzees, orangutans and gorillas. For flora, there’s the Park Gardens of the World, spread over 7.5 hectares of land. Fiddler on the Sand is a regional festival, with its open air concerts, drawing up to 100,000 spectators. When you want to take in some shopping for supplies and souvenirs, head to Central Market, located in the city centre. Relax on any of the area’s 5 sandy beaches, where you can sun, swim and people watch. There’s also sailing and wind-surfing is you’re a bit more adventurous.
