Casino de Villard-de-Lans

Villard-de-Lans is a French commune located in the Vercors, in the department of Isere and the region of Rhone-Alpes. If you’re using the town to landmark between more prominent cities, Grenoble is about 35 km away. The area is a popular ski getaway. You might be staying in or around the resort of Villard-de-Lans-en-Vercors Correncon. If you’d like to understand a bit of history of the region, visit Heritage House, located in Libertarian Square, housed in the former Town Hall. While in Libertarian Square, check out the Bear statue, carved from pink marble by artist Pierre Filippi. Once you’ve gotten your bearings and visited the assorted attractions, head over to the casino for a session of cards and slots.

The casino provides a fleet of 50 classic and video slot machines and video poker terminals, starting as low as one cent and climbing to 2 EUR. Slots run 7 days a week from 11 am to 2 am Sunday through Thursday and until 3 am Fridays and Saturdays. Table games in the casino consist of blackjack, with its 2 EUR minimum, running daily (closed Mon and Tues) and stud poker, also at a 2 EUR minimum, closed Wednesday and Thursday. Both games begin at 9:30 pm and close the same time as slots.

Hotel/Accommodations

Stay at the Grand Hotel de Paris, located within the Natural Park of Vercors. Dating back to 1894, its one of the oldest institutions in the area, passed down 6 generations. Look for authentic traditional French cuisine in their restaurant. Rooms come in standard, superior and family and are equipped with satellite television and free wireless internet access. Alternate accommodations within the hotel property include apartments, with restaurant half board. Unwind in their 3 hectares of private park. Access to activities include an ice rink, bowling, the casino, a disco, cinema and a free shuttle to ski areas.

Dining

Dine in the casino restaurant La Caverne Gourmande, with its Choranches Caves-inspired décor and inventive cuisine. The restaurant is open daily (closed Tuesday and Wednesday) from noon to 2 pm and 7:30 pm until 10 pm. Look for themed nights and musical acts. Other venues include La Roseraie, a small restaurant dishing up creative cuisine, Les Trente Pas, located steps from Villard Church and serving modern cuisine, La Ferme du Bois Barbu (traditional cuisine) and Auberge des Montauds, with its fondues and raclette.

Attractions/NightLife

Find your favourite cocktails in the casino bar or one of the local venues like Café de la Bascule, Depetro or Le Country (for dancing). Looking for something good humoured? Try the Festival D’Humour et de Creation de Villard de Lans. Caving is a popular outdoor activity here as is skiing. If you’re a horse fan, there are three equestrian centres in town. Museums include Heritage House, housed in the former Town Hall, and The Magic Lair, dedicated to the flora and fauna (especially bear) of the area. For film and theatre, there’s Cinema Rex or the Theatre of La Coupole, with its shows and fairs. Religious sites include Saint Bonnet Church, built in the 19th century, located in the centre of town in Place de la Liberte. Just outside Heritage House, be sure to check out the bear statue, a popular tourist staple.
