El Rancho Hotel and Casino

Port-au-Prince is the capital and largest city in Haiti and has a bit shy of one million people. If you count the surrounding metropolitan area, you’re looking at about 3.7 million. Colonial French first brought the city about back in 1749 and it’s been thriving since. For the persons taking vacation here, there’s several things to do. There’s the National Palace, sadly, hit by a major earthquake, but still a historical site. When looking for religious structures, head to the Our Lady of the Assumption, Haiti’s largest cathedral. For further history, go to the Musee de Pantheon National Haitien. There's hectic but eclectic shopping over at the Iron Market which has everything from local crafts to animals.

Close to most major attractions and about 12 km from the airport, is the NH Haiti El Rancho. There are 72 rooms across 3 floors and guests can take advantage of several services and facilities here such as their outdoor pool, a fitness centre, conference facilities which can service 275 guests, a restaurant with international cuisine, a bar, a currency exchange and free internet access in the building. Relax with drinks poolside, walk through the gardens or unwind on the terrace. Rooms come in pool or garden views and come with cable tv. The hotel is quite new, having been constructed just in 2013.

Dining

Look for buffet breakfasts in the hotel between 5 am and 10:30 am. There’s also lunch and dinner menus as well as 24 room service. For French-Creole cuisine head to Splurge. A little on the high end, this venue is closed Sundays. If pizza is what you’re looking for try Pizza Garden. For economic quick meals, try Foodies. Trek around the city finding your own favourite restaurants serving up authentic Haitian cuisine. Ask hotel and casino staff for suggestions on nearby places popular with locals and tourists.

Attractions/NightLife

When night rolls around and you’re looking for clubs, there’s Djumbala, an open-air venue also with live music. Xtreme plays hot band music. For a lounge style bar, try back at the hotel. To travel through the history of the region, head to the Musee du Pantheon National Haitien. Be sure to head over to the National Palace. While unfortunately hit badly by the earthquake, it's still a popular spot to visit. Our Lady of the Assumption is Haiti’s largest cathedral and can be found near the Palace. When it’s time to pick up all your souvenirs, there’s the Iron Market (Marche de Fer). It’s rather busy but there’s a little bit of everything here from trinkets to live animals. When the crushing crowds take its toll, head to the hotel and unwind poolside with your favourite cocktails or pop over to the casino for a bit of light gambling.
