Casino Atlantic Boca del Rio

Boca del Rio lies in the centre of the Mexican state of Veracruz in the area known as the Llamuras de Sotavento. The village became a city back in 1988 and has its own port, around 2000 various accommodations, and 4000 trade establishments – so finding places to stay, dine and shop shouldn’t be a problem. To get a feel for the culture and history of the area, visit one of the two museums. The Agustin Lara House Museum, or the La Casita Blanca (little white house) showcases works by poet Agustin Lara, also known as El Flaco de Oro. The Buque Canonero (cannon ship) Guanajuato is a decommissioned ship converted into a naval museum.

Dining

In the Hotel Lois is the Le Café Restaurant, serving casual breakfasts, business lunches and romantic dinners. Enjoy grilled meats accompanied or followed with domestic and imported drinks. The restaurant is open 7 days a week, 7 am to 11 pm. Look for live music on weekends. Try breakfasts over at Gran Café de la Parroquia – ask for the picadas y gorditas con huevo (fried tortillas with salsa and eggs). If you like seafood salad, try Rio de la Plata, not far from the Plaza de Armas (main square). For authentic Mexican cuisine, try any number of nearby restaurants, or eat at one of the road-side stalls.

Attractions/NightLife

Rub shoulders with the locals while sipping beer in Bar Titos, or walk about finding your own new favourite watering hole. Head to one of the two local museums, either the Buque Canonero Guahajuato, or the Agustin Lara House Museum. The San Juan de Ulua Castle (open Tuesdays through Sundays, 9 am to 5:30 pm) was the last fortress of the Spanish Empire. If you happen to be travelling during June, there’s the Bocafest, while in July there’s the Feast of Saint Ann. In May, there’s the Ylang Ylang Regional Expo, with its rodeo, cock fights, crafts and folkdance. For beaches try Mocambo Beach or Santa Ana Beach. If you like scuba diving, try over on Sacrificios Island. Consider as well, a boar tour along the Jamapa River. Other attractions include the Baluarte de Santiago, the San Pedro y San Pablo Church and the World Trade Centre Veracruz. For shopping, there’s the Plaza Boca del Rio, Plaza Santa Ana and the Plaza Americas, as well as various street vendors.
