The population is around 155,000 and has been nicknamed ‘the pearl of the Gulf’. It was and to a large extent still is, a fishing city, so this is a great time try out some seafood dishes, Mexican-style. For some history and culture, try the Museum over in the Victoriano Nieves Cespedes Hospital Building with some Maya artefacts, or the Iglacia del Virgen del Carmen, dating back to colonial times. If you head over to the Parque Principal Zaragosa, over by the Municipal Palace, you may catch some live concerts Thursday and Sunday evenings.

The casino offers a selection of classic and video slot machines in assorted denominations, as well as having electronic bingo for those who need to feed their bingo craving. There are no hotels on site. About 1 km from the casino you can find the Hacienda Real del Carmen. The 5 star hotel first opened its doors in 2000 and has recently undergone upgrades. Get information on all the major local attractions, and maybe even a few lesser-known ones as well. Obtain help is arranging tours and transport to save you some legwork later.

Dining

Enjoy the flavourful regional cuisine, with its Caribbean and pre-Hispanic roots. It’s also a fantastic time to check out some seafood items. Some dishes worth trying out are pescado en escabeche (pickled fish), pan de cazon (fried tortilla with dogfish), and seafood cocktails. Walk along the piers with its market and small vendor stations, picking out and trying something new. Mexican-American fusion is served in El Vaquero. Try the steaks or frijoles charros (sausage and beans). Pichana’s Grill serves grilled meats, pork loin, chicken dishes, and has a large salad bar. For more seafood, head to El Marino, with its shellfish and shrimp dishes. When you’re looking for buffets, there’s Samba Grill.

Attractions/NightLife

Located in the Carmen Fun Centre, Plataforma offers assorted cocktails and varied music. High-end clubs include Tantra, while Voga is more lounge style. You can also catch free live concerts Thursdays and Sundays (evenings) in Parque Principal Zaragosa, over by the waterfront. If you’re someone who enjoys a relaxing afternoon of fishing, there’s plenty fish in the area. Try around the lagoon or the Gulf. To view a modest collection of Maya ceramics, try the museum in the Victoriano Nieves Cespedes Hospital Building. Other areas of interest include the Iglacia del Virgen del Carmen and the Universidad Autonoma del Carmen.
