Cuernavaca is the largest and capital city of the Mexican state Morelos. The city has been likened to the US’ Beverley Hills, being an up-scale escape from the busy city life. The city’s name itself comes from the Nahuatl ‘cuauhnahuac’ meaning ‘near the woods’ or ‘close to trees’. If you’re looking for things to do, head over to the Palace of Cortes, built back in 1535 or try one of the gardens like Juarez Garden (built in 1955) or the Morelos Garden (built in 1908). Together, the two are referred to as the ‘zocalo’. If you’re looking for architectural or religious sites, try the Cuernavaca Cathedral. After visiting the various attractions, pop into the casino for a bit of R and R.

For simpler local fare, grab something from one of the road-side carts or stalls or for tacos try along Calle de los Tacos. Light fare can also be found at La Cubano, La Princesa and Los Orientales. For Italian, head to Trattoria Marco Polo. Yucatecan fare is found in Faisan. La Provence dishes up French cuisine.

Attractions/NightLife

For live music try Los Arcos or La Bola. For lounge-style environs there’s Reposado. If you just want somewhere to relax and have a beer, try La Taurina and Crudalia. When you want to kick up your heels, clubs include El Alebrije, Barbazul, or Taizz. During the days, check out one of the local museums like Museo Muros, Museo de Fotografia Antigua, the Museum of Traditional and Herbal Medicine, or the Robert Brady Museum. Religious sites include the Cuernavaca Cathedral, the Church of Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe, the Church of Nuestra Senora de los Milagros, the Chapitel del Calvario (built in 1532) and the Church of San Jose. Teopanzolco is an archaeological site dating back to 1427. Also woth checking out are Borda Garden, Juarez and Morelos Gardens, Palacio de Cortes, the Salto de San Anton (a ravine with waterfalls) and Chapultepec Ecological Park.
