Casino River Culiacan

Culiacan is located in a valley at the confluence of the rivers Hamaya and Tamazula, in north western Mexico in the state of Sinaloa. The municipality has a total area of 1837 sq miles and a population of around 675,000 people. It’s also the largest city in the state. There’s plenty to do here, for attractions, dining and night life. If you’re driving, it might be worth the 30 minute trip outside the city to check out the Imala hot springs (also with dams and reservoirs nearby) and Atlata Beach. Some local highlights include La Lomita (tallest church in Culiacan), their 2 major sports stadiums, the botanical gardens, the science museum, the regional history museum, and the civic centre, which also houses a zoo.

Dining

Choose to dine at one of the two restaurants back at the hotel, the Mezzosole or the La Terraza, or find a restaurant in the city. Regional dishes to look for include chilorio (tortillas with pulled pork and spices) and desserts like jamoncillos, tacuarines and piloncillos. Venues include El Farallon and Los Arcos for seafood, and La Mariposa Amarilla (the yellow butterfly) for authentic Sinaloan cuisine. For Italian, there’s Italianni’s. For Chinese, try China-loa (with buffets) and Huy Fong.

Attractions/NightLife

Local clubs include O Lydia Discotheque, with its Egyptian-inspired décor and 1200 person capacity, Penthouse Klub, with its DJs and light shows, and Kuwa, with live Latin music. During the day, treat the kids to Splash Club, largest water park in Sinaloa, or the Culiacan Zoo, over in the Constitucion Civic Centre (also with dancing fountains). Everyone can enjoy the Botanical Garden and the Centro de Ciencias de Sinaloa (the Sinaloa Science Centre), home to the Earth’s 5th largest meteorite. Sports fans can check out the baseball stadium Estadio Angel Flores, home of the Los Tomateros de Culiacan, or the football stadium Estadio Banorte (formerly Estadio Carlos Gonzales), home of the Los Dorados de Sinaloa. When it’s time to grab those souvenirs or pick up supplies, hit one of the local malls like the Plaza Galerias San Miguel, Plaza Fiesta or Forum Culiacan Mall, largest in the city. Over in the Parque Constitucion, there’s the Regional History Museum. The Centro Cultural Genaro Estrada has a group of museums and is home to the Orquesta Sinfonica Sinaloa de las Artes. For religious sites, check out La Tomita or Templo de Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe, tallest church in Culiacan. Go for leisurely strolls, biking and pedal-boating over in Las Riveras Park.
