Hermosillo (formerly Santisima Trinidad del Pitic and Presidio del Pitic) is located in the Mexican state of Sonora. The city is generally a resting stop for those working their way toward the coast, but if you decide to stay for a visit, there’s still several things to do. A good starting point is the Plaza Zaragoza (built back in 1865), with its gardens and monuments to General Garcia Morales and General Ignacio Pesqeuira. Framing the plaza are the Government Palace and a cathedral, the Catedral de la Asuncion. Once you’ve gotten your bearings, pop over to the casino for a session of gambling.

There are no hotels on site. About 1 km from the casino you can find the City Express Hermosillo. Rooms come equipped with cable television, air conditioning, and free internet access. Simply choose the ones which fall within your budget and are close to the places you intend on visiting. Whichever hotel you choose, talk to staff about information on all the nearby attractions, popular places to eat, and where the best night life can be found.

Dining

Dine while a live mariachi band performs in the background at Mariachisimo. Watch the chefs prepare your meals when you opt for Xochimilco. Pick your own steaks when choosing Sonora Steakhouse. For Spanish cuisine, there’s La Casa Grande, also with live music and flamenco dancing on Fridays. For easy eats, try Taco Grill or Irasema. There are restaurants around the city serving various international fare such as American, Japanese, Korean, Chinese and authentic Mexican dishes. Find your own favourite venues or ask hotel and casino staff for recommendations.

Attractions/NightLife

Housed in a penitentiary built in 1897, is the Museum of Sonora. Check out the underground cells. Open Tuesdays through Sundays, closed Mondays. For arts and crafts and historical memorabilia, there’s the Regional Museum of Sonora’s University. Sports fans might like the Hector Espino Stadium, home of the Hermosillo Naranjeros, a baseball team. If you’re travelling with family, try the Centro Ecologico, the local zoo. It houses over 300 species of plant, and 200 species of animals. La Pintada, about 60 km outside the city, is an archaeological site. It has caves with paintings and burial spaces. For water activities, head around Kino Bay, where there’s swimming, scuba diving and snorkelling. If you enjoy hiking and mountain climbing head to the Cerro de la Campana Mountain. Religious sites include the Catderal de la Asuncion, completed in the 20th century, but started back in the 18th. After all the various day activities, go out for a bit of nightlife. Clubs include Classico, Velvet and Republic. For live music try Korajudaz. For beer, billiards and chatting up locals, there’s Biblioteca Bar and Pool.
