La Paz (translated as ‘peace’) is the capital city of the Mexican state Baja California Sur. The population is around 215,000 people, or 250,000 with the surrounding area. Of course, spending your holidays in sunny Mexico means you’ll want to spend some time at the beach. Try Malecon, La Paz’s newly reconstructed waterfront. Unwind by sunning, strolling and jogging along the beach, or come sundown, look for live music under the gazebo. If you’re more interested in taking in some culture and history and hiding away indoors, try one of the following venues: the Centro Cultural Esperanza Rodriguez with its art exhibits, the Biblioteca de la Historia de las Californias (a history library), the Museo Regional de Antropologia e Historia, tracing the region’s history, and the Museo Comunitario de la Ballena, with its whale art and artefacts.

Bismark II began as a taco stand, and while the taco stand remains out front, there’s a seafood restaurant as well. Ask about their lobster tacos. Mc Fisher offers a wide array of seafood tacos – clam, shrimp, oyster, marlin and octopus to name a few. Try manta-ray tacos over at Super Tacos Baja California. Budget strained? Try 2-for-1 Wednesdays at El Michoacano. Vegetarians should head to El Quinto Sol. Try sit-down indoors or courtyard dining in La Boheme, terrace dining in La Terraza, or ocean-view dining in Kiwi. Quick eats? Try Carlos n Charlie’s for burgers, also with steak, pasta and chicken.

Attractions/NightLife

Interested in live music? Try Colima By Café or Las Varitas. For dancing, there’s La Pazlapa. Local museums include the Museo Comunitario de la Ballena and Museo Regional de Antropologia e Historia. Religious sites include the monument Santuario de la Virgen de Guadalupe and Catedral de Nuestra Senora de la Paz. Other attractions include the waterfront at Malecon, Plaza Constitucion (or Jardin Velasco), the Teatro de la Ciudad and the history library Biblioteca de la Historia de las Californias.
