Leon is the 7th most populous city in Mexico and is located in the state of Guanjuato. The city has around 1.7 million people and 2.1 million if you’re counting the surrounding area. There’s a large leather industry here, so when out shopping, it’s an ideal time to pick up shoes, belts, coats and handbags.

Restaurant Cadillac adorns its walls with movie posters, while Panteon Taurino showcases former Mexican bull-fighters. Almuerzos San Isidro, steps from the Poliforum, dishes up the best Mexican fare has to offer. Try the Antares chain –they’ve two locations nearby, the Antares Plaza Mayor and the Antares Jerez. When looking for more options, ask hotel and casino staff to point out where the tourists and locals frequent.

Attractions/NightLife

When the sun sets, head out to the bars and clubs for some night life. Johnny Gringo is good for rubbing shoulders with the locals. They also have a restaurant and occasional live music. Singers and bands perform in Studio. For dancing there’s Rio Latino. Discover local history and culture by visiting the Teatro Dobaldo, with its concerts, stage productions and dance performances, the Museo de la Ciudad, presenting the works of local and international artists and the Casa de Cultura Diego Rivera, over by the Plaza de los Fundadores. There's the Heroes’ Causeway Arch (Arco de la Calzada de los Heroes). Construction dates back to 1896 and their signature lion statue was added in 1943, later replaced by a bronze one in 1958. The Municipal Palace was once a military barracks (1861-1867) and contains a bronze statue dedicated to former president Benito Juarez. It also houses the monument Portal of the Millennium, a 45 metre tower. Religious sites include the Basilica Cathedral of Our Holy Mother of the Light, dating back to 1746 yet finished in the 19th century, and the Santuario Expiatorio del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús (Expiatory Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus), going back to 1920.
