Located in the Mexican state of Guanajuato, is the city of Leon. This large city has a population of about 1.8 million people, or 2.1 if you include the surrounding area. Even though vast, you shouldn’t have too many problems getting around – the city won honourable mention for sustainable transport award. It might even be worth renting a bicycle, as bike-riding is common practise locally. This might be a good time for picking up shoes, belts, and jackets since the city has a strong leather industry. Attractions/NightLife

There’s plenty of bars and clubs around. If you’re looking for live music, head over to Antropia Café Concert. For drinks and dancing try Rio Latino. Johnny Gringo is good for rubbing shoulders with the locals and sipping beers, also with food and occasional live music. A good way to understand a bit more about the city is by exploring its culture and history. Visit the Museo de la Ciudad, showcasing works by international and Mexican artists, the Teatro Doblado, with dance and concerts, and the Casa de Cultura Diego Rivera. For religious sites, there’s the Templo Expiatorio (or Santuario Expiatorio del Sagrado Corazon de Jesus – the Expiatory Sanctuary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus), with construction dating back to 1920. Added were the chapel to the Virgin of Lourdes (1935) and the chapel to Virgin of Guadalupe (1935-39). For architecture, there’s the Casa Municipal, once a military barracks back in the mid 1800s. Added was the Portal of the Millennium, a 45 metre tower. Other attractions include the Heroes’ Causeway Arch (Arco de la Calzada) with construction going back to 1896.
