Grand Casino de Leon

Leon is a rather large city, with its 1.7 million people (or 2.1 with the surrounding area included). It’s part of the Mexican state Guanajuato and is the 7th most populous city in Mexico. It’s considered one of the most eco-friendly cities in Mexico and was awarded honourable mention for sustainable transport in 2011. Be part of the solution, and consider renting a bicycle to tour through the city. The city also received an award for City Water Champion for its progress in the areas of sanitation and wastewater re-use. The city has a large leather industry, so when out shopping, it might be a good time to pick up jackets, handbags or shoes.

When you’re happy to kick back and relax, sipping beers and chatting up the locals, head to Johnny Gringo, also with a restaurants and sometimes live music. Check out the museums and cultural centres to best explore the history of the area. Try the Museo de la Ciudad, showing the works of Mexican and international artists. Or over by the Plaza de los Fundadores, there’s the Casa de Cultura Diego Rivera. If you enjoy stage productions, concerts and dance, there’s the Teatro Doblado. Be sure to visit the Arco de la Calzada (the Heroes’ Causeway Arch), which while has been updated several times, began construction back in 1896. The Municipal Palace was once a military barracks, and is now home to the monument Portal of the Millennium, a 45 metre tower. For religious sites, head to the Santuario Expiatorio del Sagrado Corazon (the Expiatory of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, dating back to 1920, and with two chapels (the chapel of the Virgin of Lourdes and the chapel of the Virgin of Guadalupe). There’s also the Basilica Cathedral of Our Mother of the Light, dating back 1746.
