Trek around the mountains surrounding Monterrey, following trails and dipping through canyons. South of the city, are the Sierra Madre Mountains which are part of the Parque Nacional Cumbres de Monterrey and also include Parque Ecologico Chipinque. The area is ideal for hiking with its 36 km of trails. Check out the indigenous flora as well as fauna like the 174 species of butterfly which frequent here. If you prefer your time exploring indoors, be sure to spend time in one or all of the several museums scattered around the city. The metro area is quite large, so you won’t have any problems finding restaurants, bars, night clubs and accommodations.

Be sure to find all the best that authentic Mexican cuisine has to offer. There’s plenty of restaurants around, so you shouldn’t feel lacking for options. Ask hotel and casino staff for recommendations on popular places in the city. Regional items worth trying include cabrito (roasted lamb) and machaca (shredded beef and scrambled eggs). Fonda San Francisco dishes up authentic Mexican fare. Ask about their molito de hongos – chicken with mushroom mole. Try the tortillas, tostados and quesadillas in La Casa de Maiz. Vegetarians should head to La Zanahoria with its mock meats. Find Italian staples like pizza, gnocchi and risotto in Iannilli.

Attractions/NightLife

Look around Barrio Antiguo for night life, or try the clubs Kokoloco or Skizzo Electroclub. For Trova, jazz and blues tunes there’s La Tumba Uncover local culture and history in the museums such as Horno3, the Museo del Noreste, Museo de Historia Mexicana, Centro Cultural Alfa, Museo Regional de Nuevo Leon and Museo del Vidrio. Visit some of the green areas like Macroplaza and Gran Plaza, or find even more flora in the Parque Ecologico Chipinque, also with 174 species of resident butterflies. Treak though local canyons, hike along trails, try mountain climbing, or for the more adventurous, go bungee jumping. Back at the hotel, you can enjoy tennis and racquetball or hang pool-side and unwind.
