Xalapa (or sometimes Jalapa), officially known as Xalapa-Enriquez, is the capital of the Mexican state Veracruz. The city has around 390,000 people, or about 415,000 if you include the surrounding area. The name comes from the Nahuatl ‘xalli’ (sand) and ‘apan’ (water place), roughly translating as ‘spring in the sand’. It has been sometimes called the city of flowers, or la ciudad de las flores. There’s several attractions worth visiting, particularly the ones which best demonstrate the beautiful outdoor surroundings. Try the Parque Juarez, the Jardin de Esculturas (the sculpture garden) and the Parque de los Tecajetes.

Gaming

The casino offers roughly 200 classic and video slot machines which come in various denominations. For those who need to satisfy their bingo craving, there’s electronic bingo. People who prefer to bet on the horses as well as televised sporting events should look for the casino’s sportsbook. Chances are, you’ll be spending a lot of time walking around the city out in the sun, so when you need some respite away indoors, pop into the casino and try your luck in some slots.

Hotel/Accommodations

There are no hotels on site. At just 0.3 km from the hotel you can find the Hotel Clara Luna. They offer 19 rooms at this charming hotel. Guests can enjoy free local calling and take advantage of room service. As long as proximity to the casino is not a concern, there are alternate accommodations throughout the city. Simply choose the one which best meet your ideal level of comfort of your preferred budget. Consider those places which are closest to the attractions you intend on visiting.

Dining

For authentic Mexican cuisine, try La Fonda. To best enjoy your meals here, ask to be seated out on the balcony where you can watch the street below. Informal dining out in the open-air can be found in the cafeteria-style Plazoleta. For those who are vegetarian, you may want to eat at El Patio. To find more venues try along Callejon Gonzales Aparicio. One option along here is La Condesa. Or try over in the Mercado de la Rotunda. If you want to find the most popular places around, ask hotel or casino staff to point you in the right direction.

Attractions/NightLife

When you want to go out dancing, there’s La Chiva. For live music, try Tierra Luna. If your taste in music is a little more refined, there’s the Teatro del Estado Ignacio de la Llave, which hosts the Orquesta Sinfonica de Xalapa. Take in the indigenous fauna in one of the parks and gardens. The Jardin Botanico Clavijero is ideal. There’s also the Jardin de Esculturas (the sculpture garden), the Parque Juarez, where you can see the Sierra Madre Oriental mountains in the distance, and the Parque de los Tecajetes. For museums, there’s the Museo de Antropologia, with artefacts from the Olmec, Totanic and Huastec, the Haceinda del Lencero (also with a chapel, gardens and lake) and the Museo Interactivo de Xalapa, with a planetarium. When looking for religious sites and architecture, there’s the Xalapa Cathedral, built back in 1773, and the Church of San Jose.
