Xalapa, also called Jalapa, and officially Xalapa-Eriquez, is the capital of Veracruz and has a population of just under 400,000, but just over 400K if you include the surrounding area. There are several restaurants within Xalapa. La Fonda dishes up Mexican fare as does Plazoleta. For vegetarian eats, try El Patio. For assorted international menus, walk along Callejon Gonzales Aparicio, which has various restaurants where you find items like sushi, falafel and more. You can always head over to the market (Mercado de la Rotunda) and pick out your own items to prepare lunches and snacks yourself.

Attractions/NightLife

When the sun sets and it’s time to the hit the clubs, try La Chiva. If you prefer a laid back environment with live music and poetry readings, head to Tierra Luna. If your idea of music is a bit more high-class, there’s the Teatro del Estado Ignacio de la Llave, which hosts the Orquesta Sinfonica de Xalapa. During your days, you can always head to one of the museums that are in the city, where you grab a better understanding of the local history and culture. These include the Museo de Anthropologia, the Jardin de Esculturas and the Hacienda del Lencero. For religious sites and architecture, there’s the Xalapa Cathedral, built back in 1773. For gardens and scenic views try the Parque Juarez, the Paseo de los Tecajetes, Jardin Botanico Clawijero and the Paseo de los Lagos.
