Carnaval

From panoramic views, interesting topographical curiosities and architecture and history there’s several things to go check out while visiting Masaya. To get the lay of the land head to El Coyotepe, a 19th century fortress from where you can see most of the city. The open area of El Malecon provides great views of the Masaya Volcano and Masaya Lagoon. Spend an afternoon wandering the volcanically-cut bat caves in Volcan Masaya National Park, also with its museum and tourist information centre. After soaking up the country-side, head on over to Carnaval, the local casino.

Gaming

The casino, is, frankly, a little light in their offerings, but probably enough to kill an hour or two of your day between city excursions. There are a total of 65 slot machines and video poker terminals and zero table games. Granted, there isn’t a lot for the die-hard enthusiast but remember, sometimes a slots jackpot is only a spin away and a sweet win could help ease the ding to your wallet after picking up all those souvenirs at the marketplace. The casino is also open 24 hours a day, accommodating any schedule.

Hotel/Accommodations

There are no hotels on site. The nearest to the casino is about 1 km away. The Madera’s Inn has rooms in single, doubles and triples with a hotel capacity of just 36 people. Rooms comes with fans/air conditioning, wireless internet access and cable tv. An airport shuttle service is available and there is a fitness centre on site. The Inn also offers tour services so be sure to utilize it to best know where to go and what times of day are ideal. Also ask about popular eateries close to where you’re staying and visiting.

Dining

There’s two nearby options if you’re looking for American cuisine. One serves standard fare like meats and seafood and vegetarian options which is Che-Gris as well as having local fare. The other is Aeropeuerto 79 with more adventurous menu items like deer, rabbit and armadillo. For Mexican food like stews, tacos and seafood, head to La Jarochita. For outdoor grilled steaks go to Chapo’s Bar and Grill. Walk around the city looking for your own new favourite eatery dishing up authentic Nicaraguan cuisine.

Attractions/NightLife

If you’re looking to go dancing there’s Coco Jamboo. For reggae music try El Toro Loco or Chapo’s Bar and Grill. If karaoke is more up your alley, try La Ronda on Wednesdays and Fridays. Trek about the city taking in all the beautiful views. To overlook the entirety of the city, head to the fortress El Coyotpe. To look upon the Masaya Lagoon and Masaya Volcano you’re off to El Malecon. Tour through the volcanically-cut bat caves at Volcan Masaya National Park. With displays honouring the fallen of the Nicaraguan Revolution of 1979 there’s Museo de Heroes y Martires, located in the town hall, Alcaldia de Masaya. For shopping there’s La Plazita de Monimbo with its exotic foods and El Mercado Viejo for handicrafts. If religious sites and architecture are your cup of tea, there’s plenty of churches in the area which include those dedicated to San Juan, San Jeronimo and San Miguel to name a few.
