The Gran Asuncion is comprised of several cities and has a population of roughly 2 million people. Because of the surrounding metropolitan area, you shouldn’t have any problems finding things to do by way of attractions and landmarks, locating restaurants and bars or generally keeping yourself occupied. Highlights include the Palacio de los Lopez, the Godoi Museum and the National Pantheon of Heroes. After you’ve spent afternoons exploring the region, pop over to the casino for a session of light gambling.

The casino might not be as large as some you might be used to but they do have a varied, if moderate selection. Within the casino, you can find classic and video slots, roulette and table games such as blackjack and baccarat. The casino runs during limited hours so be sure to plan your visit accordingly. Currently the casino operates from Thursday to Sunday, between the hours of 9 pm and 6 am. There are no hotels on site and the nearest is roughly 4 km away. The Hotel Rural La Quintana de Valdes is actually a converted convent but retains most of its original structure. Rooms here are limited so be sure to phone ahead for availability. Rooms come equipped with televisions, heating and internet access. For added comfort, ask about their one suite which includes a bathtub. If you’ve rented a vehicle, head into the city centre looking for alternative accommodations should you prefer something more spacious or with more amenities and facilities as there are several within the surrounding cities.

About one kilometre from the casino (there are no dining facilities on site) you can find the Casa Telva, serving meals with local and Belgian fusion flavours. There are several restaurants within the city proper should you have the means to drive about. Find any number of venues serving up authentic Paraguay cuisine or be adventurous and try one of the nearby eateries based on popularity by locals.

Attractions/NightLife

When the sun sets and you’re looking to kick up your heels, there’s Mouse Cantina. If you prefer the younger crowd, there’s Coyote. After hours fun can be found in Asuncion Rocks, running until the wee hours. Bear in mind, most night clubs have cover charges, so be prepared to pay at the door. Alternately, look for your own more humble local watering hole. Fill your days checking out local sites and attractions. To learn more about the history of the area, there’s the Godoi Museum or the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes. For culture try the Juan de Salazar Cultural Center, the National Ballet, OSCA (the City of Asuncion Symphony Orchestra), or the Paraguyan-Japanese Center. When looking for architecture or religious sites, there’s the Metropolitan Cathedral or the Church of La Encarnacion. When it’s time to look for souvenirs, there’s any number of malls like Shopping del Sol or Shopping Villa Morra. Other general attractions include the Casa de la Independencia, the National Pantheon of the Heroes, and Palacio de los Lopez. A good place to begin, where there’s several shops and attractions, is Calle Palma, located downtown.
