San Bernardino Country Club & Hotel Acuario

Located on the shores of the Ypacarasi Lake, the resort town of San Bernadino is a popular holiday destination for Paraguay natives and some tourists. Peak time is during the summer, which locally falls between around December to February. While perhaps not the ideal vacation spot for visitors, there are a few things to do if you’re passing through or staying. Walk along the shores of the lake, participate in water activities like jet-skiing or swimming, or check out local attractions and bars. Use common sense when going into some neighbourhoods after dark. Consider sticking to popular and well-lit areas and trust that little voice in your head before entering bars and clubs. Find venues that are busy and be mindful of your surroundings.

Gaming

The casino is rather small by several standards. The slots selection is rather meagre, with just 28 classic and video slot machines. There are however, several table games (14 in total) consisting of blackjack, craps, punto banco and American roulette. After hanging out in town and checking out the local attractions, pop into the casino to try your hand in cards and slots. A few extra bucks could finance your restaurant and bar bills when you hit the town after dark again.

Hotel/Accommodations

On the shores of Lake Ypacarasi, the hotel offers rooms equipped with air conditioning, cable television and internet access and come in single, double, triple and quadruple occupancy. Facilities on site include a restaurant, pool and games room. Guests are also welcome to use the facilities at nearby San Bernadino Country Club, just steps from the hotel. For international and American-inspired fare like burgers, head to Walterio. German-influenced dishes are also found here. Room service is also available back at the hotel.

A popular local and tourist bar is Lido Bar, with costumed wait-staff and serving light meals. There are several local watering-holes but use common sense when frequenting unknown venues. Consider travelling in groups after dark and sticking to well lit and trendy environs. Ask hotel and casino staff for suggestions on where to hang out. Use your gut instincts when choosing where to go. Look for hot spots that are busy with other tourists. The town is considered a tourist destination but mostly to other Paraguay residents. During days, check out local attractions like museums and theatres or stroll along the shores of the lake. Keep to busy neighbourhoods especially after dark. Alternately hang poolside at the hotel or use the facilities at the country club.
