If you happen to be traveling through Saint-Louis, there are several note-worthy attractions worth checking out. You can always hoof it, but for a bit more comfort try one of the horse-drawn carriage tours and save yourself some figurative and literal leg-work. To check out some indigenous fauna (primarily birds, as it’s coined ‘bird island’) visit the national park Langue de Barbarie, where you can see pelicans, gulls and flamingos. The reserve Guembeul has animals such as gazelles, monkeys and turtles. About 70 miles out, there’s the National Park Bird Sanctuary. This is more a laid-back environment - think about visiting the parks, taking afternoon tours around the city, soaking up the architecture, enjoying picnics and strolling along the river.

The casino offers a very humble 26 gaming machines consisting of classic and video slots and video poker terminals. There may not be enough here for the most enthusiastic of gamblers, but perhaps enough to kill an hour or two of light gambling when you want to get indoors and unwind a bit. The casino is open from 7 pm until 2 am daily and you can also find a restaurant on site. Try your hand at slots and perhaps hit a nice little jackpot before heading back out into the city to explore.

Hotel/Accommodations

The hotel offers 32 rooms, 4 suites and 1 senior suite over three floors and come equipped with air conditioning, televisions and internet access. For extra comfort and space, opt for the senior suite with private terrace and a view of the city. On site you can drinking and dining venues. The Hotel La Residence is close to several attractions. Maximize your stay here by asking staff for directions on local attractions, which bars and restaurants to frequent and information on booking tours.

Dining

The hotel restaurant is open daily from noon to 2:30 pm and 8 pm until 10:30 pm and serves such menu items as Fulani salad, papillote fish and spaghetti. Ask about their chocolate mousse dessert. Keep an eye for special themed days like Wednesdays with traditional African cuisine and Sundays’ ravioli dinners. For alternate dining venues, ask hotel and casino staff about nearby eateries popular with both locals and tourists or seek out one yourself to sample authentic Senegal cuisine.

Attractions/NightLife

The casino bar offers drink specials, happy hours on Saturdays, and serves light snacks. Head to the Lompoul desert and consider renting a 4x4 vehicle to cruise over the dunes. Try picnic lunches out by the lake (Guiers) also with a Saturday market. To discover some of the local fauna (mostly birds but a few select animals) try Langue de Barbarie or the National Bird Santuary, about 70 miles outside the city. The reserve Guembeul has a few animals like monkeys and turtles. Check out some of the local architecture with colonial homes, visit the lighthouse, the Rognat barracks or the Grand Mosque. Save yourself some walking time by taking a local tour, which highlights most local attractions as you stretch out in a horse-drawn carriage.
