Paramaribo (or simply Par’bo), with its ¼ million people is the capital and largest city in Suriname, and holds a little over half its entire population. You shouldn’t be lacking for ways to fill your days with the surplus of major attractions. If you’re looking for a starting point, try the central square. In, or within proximity, you can find the presidential palace, dating back to the 18th century, a statue dedicated to the former prime minster Pengel, and the Palmentuin, where you can see wild birds, Capuchian monkeys and an array of flora like the royal palms. Religious sites here include the Petrus and Paulus Cathedral and the Dutch Israeli Synagogue. Museums here include the Stichting Surinaams Museum and the Numismatic Museum. After trekking though Paramaribo, head to the retreat outside the city (Lelydrop) with its casino.

It’s a bit of a drive from downtown and several attractions (perhaps 20 minutes) but accessible if you happen to be driving. Rooms here (which total 23) come in standard and moderate, come equipped with air conditioning, tv and internet access, several of which overlook the gardens. Facilities on site include a swimming pool and poolside bar, and guests can enjoy a free breakfast with their stay.

Dining

Head into Paramaribo for broader dining opportunities. You can find your own venue or choose one like Mirosso Indonesisch Restaurant, with its Javanese cuisine, or Joosje Roti Shop serving East Indian fare. If you’re feeling adventurous, shop for supplies in the markets to take back to cook in your private kitchenette back at the hotel. As well, a complimentary breakfast is included with your stay.

Entertainment/NightLife

Head into the city to check out the night life scene. Bars include Warana Lobby Bar and Tibiti Bar while clubs include Club Touche and Starzz Disco. Look for live music in Café Bar ‘t Vat. If you prefer to home-stick, you can enjoy your favourite cocktails pool-side at the hotel or find drinks in the casino. For attractions, head into Paramaribo. Museums here include the Stichting Surinaams Museum and the Numismatic Museum. Historical sites include the presidential palace and Fort Zeelandia. Check out wildlife and local flora in the gardens at the Palmentuin. For religious sites, there’s the Dutch Israeli Synagogue or the Petrus and Paulus Cathedral. Pick up all your souvenirs in the markets along the water-front, as you push through busy crowds going to various stalls carrying assorted wares and live animals.
