With about ¼ of a million people (about half of Suriname’s entire population) Paramaribo is the largest and capital city. If you happen to be taking your holiday here, there’s a fair few things you can do to fill your days when not trying your luck inside the casino. To get a better understanding of the history and culture of the area, head over to one of the museums like the Numismatic Museum or the Stichting Surinaams Museum. If you prefer a more hands on approach check out such sites as the presidential palace or Fort Zeelandia. A shuttle service is offered to and from Johan Adolf Pengel Airport and help can be obtained when renting vehicles and booking tours. Use your time to also enquire about popular local bars and restaurants and information on local attractions, such as nearby Fort Zeelandia and Independence Square as well as any others.

Look for daily breakfast buffets in the hotel restaurant. For dinners try Mirosso Indonesisch Restaurant, serving up Javanese cuisine beginning at 6 pm. If you prefer East Indian fare, there’s Joosje Roti Shop. Several other venues can be found in and around the city. Find your new favourite or ask casino and hotel staff for suggestions.

Entertainment/NightLife

Check your emails via free internet available in the hotel bar as you sip your favourite cocktails or relax to a cup of coffee. Drinks are also served over in the Marana Bar and the Tibiti Bar. For dancing, head over to either Club Touche or Starzz Disco. For live music, there’s Café Bar ‘t Vat. During days, check out various attractions throughout the city. If you’re looking for museums there’s the Numismatic Museum or the Stichting Surinaams Museum. To view some of the indigenous flora and fauna try the Palmentium, with its wild birds, Capuchian monkeys and royal palms. If you’re interested in architecture and religious sites, there’s the Dutch Israeli synagogue or the Petrus and Paulus Cathedral. When you want to grab some souvenirs to bring back home you can hit either the Central Market or the Maroon Market. Other attractions in the area include the presidential palace, Fort Zeelandia, or the central square with its statue to former prime minister Pengel.
