The capital of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, Port of Spain, has a population of around 50,000 people or 130,000 if you include the entire metropolitan area. It’s the third largest municipality in the country, and offers several things to do for the visiting tourist, with its bars and clubs and many restaurants serving up a variety of international cuisines such as Creole, Chinese, and Japanese. Remember, though, when going out at night, to use common sense. Consider travelling in groups or using prominent streets and public areas as there is a definite criminal element within the city.

The casino is really rather very small by most standards, so it’s a good thing there’s plenty of other things to do while in the area. There are only 30 classic and video slots and just one poker table. There’s perhaps not enough to satisfy those keen on an entire day out at the casino, but you should be able to kill an hour inside when you need a little breather from touring the city. Regardless of where you stay, be sure to maximize your trip by chatting up staff and finding out about all the best local bars, restaurants and attractions around.

Dining

Try the Buccaneer’s Cove Bar with West Indian dinners and international fare. Look for live music, afternoon teas, happy hours, and take-away food. Hours are from 7 am until 10 pm. Familiar fare like burgers, ribs, pasta, pizza and steaks can be found at Tony Roma’s. For fine dining with Caribbean cuisine, there’s Battimamzelle, open for lunch and dinner. Tour around the city finding your own new favourite eatery, or ask hotel and casino staff for tips on places popular with locals and tourists.

Attractions/NightLife

For bars and clubs, try 51 Degrees, Alchemy, Shakers, Coco Lounge, Zen, or any other number of venues. Use common sense when going out after dark or travel in groups. Keep to busy and popular spots as well as well-lit streets as there is definitely an unsavoury element to the city. During days, hit up local attractions like the National Museum and Art Gallery, the Red House, Independence Square, Fort King George and Queen’s Park Savannah. Take the kids to the Emperor Valley Zoo or spend time walking around the Royal Botanic Gardens. Also check out the Tobago Forest Reserve and Argyle Falls. Keep an eye out for Carnival, one of the largest celebrations of its kind in the world.
