New Fairmount Hotel & Casino
A British colonial now city, Livingstone (also called Maramba) was once the capital of Zambia, though that title now goes to Lusaka. Livingstone is somewhat akin to the Zimbabwe city of Victoria Falls, in that it is a tourist and border town but lying on the opposite side of the falls. The city may be somewhat small (about 100,000 and a third again people) but you can find several pubs and restaurants in which to fill your evenings. After longs days checking out attractions and Victoria Falls itself, head into the casino for a bit of light gaming.

gaming

The casino is rather on the light side in its offerings, but people tend to visit the city for the tourist trade and to view the falls. However, after hot days out in the African sun, a bit of recreational gambling for an hour or two might be all you’re after. There are 30 classic and video slot machines and video poker terminals plus an additional 6 table games (2 blackjack, 1 poker, and 2 roulette). Try your luck in slots and roulette and a nice little slots jackpot, or your favourite number landing a few times, and you might just be able to better enjoy this leg of your trip without too much of a dent to your finances.

accomodations

The hotel offers guests 102 rooms and suites coming equipped with air conditioning and satellite tv. Request rooms with balconies or terraces for extra comfort. Facilities on site include squash courts, salon, gym, badminton courts and a swimming pool. There’s also a restaurant, bar/dance club and the casino. The hotel is conveniently located in the city centre and the airport is approximately 6 km out. Maximize your stay here by asking staff for tips on the best local eateries, bars and nearby attractions. Alternately, there are several 5 star or less expensive accommodations throughout the city.

Dining

If you’re keen on pasta and other Italian fare, head to Olga’s Italian Corner. For buffet dinners consisting of authentic African cuisine, you want Elephant Oasis Bush Dinners, with its traditional dancers performing while you dine. For standard fare and vegetarian dishes, try Golden Leaf Restaurant. There’s several restaurants in the city, so tour about finding the one best suited to your tastes and budget. Ask hotel and casino staff for recommendations.

Attractions/NightLife

A big draw to the city is Victoria Falls, as seen from the Zambian side. They’re about 6 km out so plan on taking a taxi. Ask the driver to take you to the Victoria Falls Park, also with shops. To get a feel for the history of the region, you want The Livingstone Museum. Check out the elephant camp over at the Zambezi Elephant Trails about 10 km out. For drinks head to Hippos, or for dancing try Chez nTemba. For drinks and dining there’s Rhapsody. You can always hang back at the hotel enjoying drinks poolside or relaxing out in the courtyards. For outdoors away from the hotel, head to the Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Park.
