Sweden Gambling Framework
This progressive Scandinavian nation and the world’s most reputable country found itself in the midst of a monumental change to its gambling landscape in 2018.
What happened was…
…the Swedish Parliament approved NEW Gambling Act to officially kick off on January 1, 2019!
This is a significant change for the better, compared to the former state of affairs in the Swedish online gambling industry.
How it used to be?
The Kingdom of Sweden has been engulfed by the state enforced gambling monopoly, introduced in 1934 to combat illegal betting activities, and to help protect players against exploitation by unlicensed, offshore operators.
The monopoly prohibited foreign companies to operate in the country, establishing Svenska Spel as the sole market operator.
It improved national economic potentials through the tax revenues that circulated within the borders.
The players’ potentials, on the other hand, were limited to several land-based casinos, or to neighboring countries and cruise ships in the international waters.
Opting for the latter — including online casinos that flourished in time — players effectively forced both Svenska Spel and the Government to lose the grip on them, AND on the revenue streams.
Compounded with the evolvement of anti-monopoly laws in the European Union and its increased criticism of the situation, this has led to a national initiative to re-regulate the market.
After three years of moderation…
…emerged the new Gambling Act approved on June 7, 2018, effectively ending the monopoly.
Benefits of New Legislative Measures
New law re-regulates all areas of the gambling industry.
It ushers the era of favorable conditions for operations on competitive market terms with strict consumer protection and gambling addiction prevention!
The players’ interest comes long before anything else, through a number of stipulations, such as:
- Online gambling operators are obliged to observe players protection from excessive gambling and to monitor their gambling habits;
- Online operators are to proactively engage in the prevention of players’ early problems with gambling behavior;
- Operators have to be moderate and realistic in their advertising and cannot target minors in their messaging.
On the players’ side of the plate…
…is the national self-exclusion register, governed by the gambling authority, which allows players to exclude themselves from all license holders for at least 12 months.
The Gambling Act allows foreign and domestic operators to apply for online licenses given on period of 5 years, to companies that manifest the knowledge, experience, and organizational capacity required to operate in accordance with Swedish law and regulations.
It introduces a moderate 18 percent rate for online gambling.
With a well-regulated framework in place…
…Swedish players are for the FIRST time in the position to enjoy in outstanding fun at their doorstep!
Simultaneously, the international gambling operators and vendors are finally able to offer their products and services to this potent and promising market.
It appears that we’re witnessing the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
