US South Dakota Online Casinos
The basic code in South Dakota is such that simpler is better, and it makes any form of gambling not specifically authorized by the state a Class II Misdemeanor.

While bookmaking is separate and carries with it stiffer penalties, it seems that the basic law in South Dakota would be applied equally to both players and operators.
The text is below:
22-25-1. Gambling defined--Keeping a gambling establishment--Letting building for gambling--Misdemeanor. Any person who engages in gambling in any form with cards, dice, or other implements or devices of any kind wherein anything valuable is wagered upon the outcome, or who keeps any establishment, place, equipment, or apparatus for such gambling or any agents or employees for such purpose, or any person who knowingly lets any establishment, structure, place, equipment, or apparatus for such gambling is guilty of a Class 2 misdemeanor.
It would seem that the first part of that could be applied to players, and the general term, “Implements or devices,” could be argued as covering computers in the event that an individual is gambling on the Internet.
This is another one of those oddball states that seem to make it illegal for people acting as mere players to gamble, but then also gives them the ability to recover any losses (within six months) via lawsuit. Again, it seems counterintuitive because the player would be trying to recover losses that were incurred during the commission of what is technically a crime.
Further codes in South Dakota address Internet Gambling, but only have separately listed penalties for operators. It doesn’t explicitly say so, but it is quite possible that the first part of the code would generally only be applied to operators.

In any event, there is little information pertaining to any gambling-related arrests in the state, perhaps because it is so sparsely populated. Therefore, we definitely have not found any instances of anyone arrested for gambling online as a mere player, but in our searches, I believe we have only ever found one instance in any state in the entire country.
For that reason, almost all online casinos that offer their services to players in the United States do the same in South Dakota, and they can be found here at LCB.
Is Online Gambling Legal in South Dakota?
Under South Dakota law, any online platform offering online casino games is illegal. The South Dakota Commission on Gaming constantly warns the public about joining such sites, citing personal security and financial risks. Yet, in August 2025, the Commission shared that online casino scams continued targeting South Dakota residents, and warned citizens against joining them.
This, however, doesn’t mean that all online casino sites that you will come across as a South Dakotan are completely illegal and unsafe to join. On the contrary, here at LCB, you will find many licensed sites in other jurisdictions that are perfectly safe to join, if that’s what you want to do. Follow our lead and you will learn how to locate them.
Lottery
Run by the government of South Dakota, the South Dakota Lottery was approved back in 1986 by voters. The bill to create it was signed in 1987, and ever since, the lottery has been going great.
South Dakotans aged 21 or older can even participate in video lottery, even though the minimum age to buy standard lottery tickets is 18. Since the lottery is a member of the Multi-State Lottery Association, players have access to popular games like Lotto America, Powerball, Lucky For Life, and Mega Millions, in addition to in-house draws like Dakota Cash and scratch-offs.
Land-Based and Tribal Casinos in South Dakota
South Dakota, particularly its historic town of Deadwood, is known for its commercial land-based casinos, where all kinds of roulette, poker, keno, craps, blackjack, and slot machines are offered. Deadwood played a central role during the gold rush era when gambling was legalized in the state, and continues to be the leading town for gambling in the state.
There are nine tribal casinos in South Dakota, too, based on reservation lands near big cities. Therefore, South Dakotans are free to enter and play across various land-based casino establishments, which are offered legally across the state.
Sweepstakes and Social Casinos Available in South Dakota
As long as they don’t require a purchase or any contribution, legitimate sweepstakes are allowed in South Dakota.
The law prohibits requiring any contribution as a condition of getting a prize. The South Dakota Consumer Protection office is always monitoring sweepstakes casino sites to ensure that no player ever is asked to contribute anything in order to participate and receive a prize.
Sports betting in South Dakota
In-person betting has been legal in South Dakota since 2021,but online and mobile sports betting are not. This means that South Dakota is one of the dozen US states that continue to restrict app-based and online betting, but allow in-person sports betting. 58% of voters in the state voted against its legalization in 2021, and then again in 2023, even though proponents saw expansion coming.
In 2025, a new proposal for expansion was introduced by South Dakota lawmakers, but whether we will see the bill passed and approved by voters remains to be seen. If approved by the Senate, it will be placed on the 2026 general election ballot.
For the time being, anyone interested in placing a bet on sports can do so across offshore sportsbooks, as there are plenty of them to explore and join, most of which you will find listed and reviewed here at LCB.
How to Find the Best Online Casino in South Dakota
As just mentioned, you will find so many online gambling sites here at LCB that you can explore and join as a South Dakotan player. All you have to do is learn how to recognize the best. And that’s where we come in.
We will share with you the essential criteria that an online casino must meet in order to be considered a good enough one to join. An active license from any well-respected regulator is the first criterion to make sure the site you're eyeing meets. A licensed casino is one that is constantly monitored and controlled, obliged to adhere to the laws and rules of the jurisdiction where it is licensed. As some of the most well-regarded regulators, we can mention the MGA, the UKGC, and Gibraltar, but there are several others that you can put your trust in; whatever you do, do not join a site without an online gambling license, as these are really unsafe.
The second crucial criterion to pay attention to is banking. You should join an online casino that gives you multiple methods that South Dakotans can use for international transactions. The site should at least offer bank transfer, eWallets, and credit and debit cards, but other local and global payment options are welcome, too. You should have choices, and you should have fast methods at your disposal if you wish to have a seamless online gambling experience.
On that note, you should check whether the operator processes withdrawal requests swiftly, as this is also important. Processing times depend both on the payment method and the operator, so make sure the casino you join offers fast payouts, as does the payment method you choose to use. To discover more info on this, you should explore the casino’s T&C page, and inside, you will not only learn about this but also about other rules that you need to follow and your rights as a player. Aim at joining a transparent site with fair rules, of course.
Another thing that you should check, in terms of technical stuff, is whether the casino’s Support team is responsive and promptly responds to your questions. You can do that by testing it, calling the phone number given, or writing them on their Live Chat; if fast enough, you're on the right path.
Now all you’re left to do is thoroughly go through the game selection. You'd want to join an online casino that is powered by industry-leading software developers, and that way, you will be certain that you'll be getting the best games to try. You should have the option to choose the game type you wish to play, and have a myriad of titles to pick from and play. A massive slots selection, table games, and Live Casino games are a must, as these are trending at the moment, but any other game type is welcome, as well, of course.
How to Sign Up and Play for Real Money in South Dakota
Your focus should be on finding the right online casino to join; you should not worry about what will happen after you find it. So, spend enough time to locate the site for you, and from there, as you will see now, things get much, much easier.

Practically all online casinos ensure that the registration process is perfectly easy and effortless, so anyone can go through the procedure; therefore, rest assured that the steps you'd need to take will be really intuitive. Here they are:
- First, go to the online casino’s website and visit its homepage. Look for a button that reads Register Now! or Sign Up Here!, and press it.
- The registration form will appear next, where you need to enter some very basic personal info, like name and surname, email address, and/or phone number.
- Next, you’ll be prompted to go through the T&Cs page again, this time to agree with the terms if you’re okay with them.
- And that’s it! Your account is successfully created.
While the initial registration procedure is so straightforward and you’re only required to share basic personal info, upon account verification, you’ll need to disclose more. You’ll need to share a copy of a document with the online casino operator, which proves your identity and age. You can use your ID, driver's license, passport, or any other government-issued document that proves your age and identity. Just capture it with your smartphone camera or scan it and attach it where instructed, and soon, you will receive a notification or email from the casino, informing you that your account has been verified.
From here, you can instantly move on to the next step: funding your player account. This procedure is also simple and similar across all casino brands, so just follow these steps:
- Once you log into your player account, go straight to the Payments/Banking/Cashier page and look for the Deposits section.
- Check out all the payment methods offered, learn more about the fees and limits involved, and choose the one that would work for you best.
- Enter the method’s login details or card/bank account number and set the amount you wish to deposit.
- Confirm your transaction and wait for the funds to reach your casino balance.
Important note: As mentioned earlier, the processing times for both deposits and withdrawals depend on both the payment methods used and the operator's policy on transaction processing.
What Payment Methods Can You Use to Deposit and Withdraw in South Dakota?
The thing is, picking the ideal payment method to use for online casino deposits and withdrawals can take a lot of your time, especially if you wish to have the most inexpensive transactions out there. Convenience is another thing you’d want to get, but the most important thing for you is probably the speed with which the transactions will be processed.
That’s why it is crucial to join an online casino that gives you a variety of options to consider using. The perfect online casino will allow you to use standard options like ACH, bank transfer, eCheck, and credit/debit cards, but also popular eWallets like PayPal, Skrill, Apple Pay, and Google Pay, for instance. Since cryptocurrencies are a hit across the online gambling industry, it won’t hurt to have crypto solutions at your disposal, too, to transact in Bitcoin, Litecoin, Ethereum, and USD Coin, for instance.
When choosing the method to use, make sure you choose one that processes deposits instantly and that doesn't take longer than a few hours to process withdrawals.
What Casino Software Providers and Games Are Available in South Dakota?
Online casino gambling might not be legal in South Dakota, but it is in seven US states. Across these states, so many leading software developers have obtained a license to offer their games to US players. Evolution is licensed in all seven, for instance, but so are Nolimit City, Big Time Gaming, NetEnt, and Red Tiger Gaming, to mention a few. These developers, compared to the developers like WGS, High5Games, Rival, and RTG, which were the only ones allowed to cater to US players in the past, offer far bigger choices of games, with far better quality, so things are looking up.

But you, as a South Dakotan player, will be joining offshore sites for the time being. This is not a bad thing, not at all. It is actually a positive thing, because offshore online casino sites are powered by the same developers, but so many others, as well. You will get access to premier slots, state-of-the-art Live Casino games, table games, poker, and other game types, delivered by top providers like Push Gaming, Playtech, Pragmatic Play, Yggdrasil, and Games Global, to mention a few. Therefore, high-quality, varied content is guaranteed.
What Casino Bonuses Can Players in South Dakota Claim?
Before we get into the types of bonuses that you will come across when you start exploring offshore sites to join as a South Dakotan player, it is important to know more about the wagering requirements. Some bonus offers come with low wagering requirements, but some with high wagering requirements, and this could shape your entire online gambling experience. First of all, these requirements come with virtually every offer, and you must know all about them before you claim an offer. They range from 5x to 50x the bonus amount, which in other terms means from $50 to $500 on a $10 bonus. This means that for a $10 bonus you claimed, you are obliged to invest and play through $50-$500 to be able to cash out any winnings you made with your bonus. That’s why it is paramount that you choose offers with low wagering requirements.
Now that you’ve learned to be careful with the wagering requirements, it’s time to learn the types of bonuses you will come across. A Sign Up bonus is usually the first, since, as its name implies, it is offered to you upon registration. Another form this bonus appears in is the Welcome Bonus Package. Here, you get a Deposit Match and a specific number of Free Spins to use over the course of a few days or the week after you registered.
Free Spins can be given individually, too, for a single slot, for instance, a new release, for a bunch of epic slots, or all slots at the site; it is all up to the operator. Another offer to look out for is the Cashback Bonus, which is great as a safety net to get back some of the funds you lost playing. Tournaments are fun, too, and these can be organized for slot games, poker, or blackjack, for example, so if you're up for some competition, go for them. Don't forget to claim your Birthday bonus, which is pretty self-explanatory, or your Refer-a-Friend bonus, given to you when you recommend a new player to join the casino.
Most leading online casinos offer a Loyalty Program, too, dedicated to all those loyal depositors who keep coming back for more. Luxurious cars, trips to exotic destinations, expensive gadgets, tickets to important events or shows, and more are for grabs for the most loyal players here.
Responsible Gambling in South Dakota
South Dakota is home to multiple responsible gambling organizations that offer help with problem gambling. The state continues encouraging players to gamble responsibly and stop chasing losses, to prevent any gambling-related harm. But should any player exhibit addiction symptoms, they can always turn to the National Council on Problem Gambling, Gamblers Anonymous, Gam-Anon, or reach out to the agents via the 1-888-781-HELP Problem Gambling Helpline.
Those who feel like they've crossed the line with online gambling have the self-exclusion tool at their disposal, offered across all online casino sites. With it, they can stop gambling online for good, excluding themselves from all online gambling platforms, or pause their online gambling activities for a certain period of time.
