The Turkish Lira in History
The Turkish lira is the official currency of Turkey and Northern Cyprus. Like several other European and Middle Eastern currencies, the lira derived from the ancient Roman unit of weight libra. The first iteration of the currency was called the Ottoman lira, introduced in 1844. It stayed in circulation until 1927, before being replaced by the first Turkish lira released a few years earlier in 1923. Since then, there have been several different iterations of the currency that have hit the market.
The Turkish lira comes in twelve iterations. These include six banknotes and six coins. The banknotes are 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, and 200 lira. The more frequently used coins in the lineup are the 25 kurus, 50 kurus, and 1 lira coin. The other three are the 1, 5, and 10 kurus coins which are rare. Although it’s pretty well-known, the Turkish lira has been ranked the world’s least valuable currency several times by the Guinness Book of Records. These instances happened in 1995 and 1996 and again from 1999 to 2004.
Casino Deposit Methods that Offer Turkish Lira Support
The world of online gambling in Turkey is pretty bleak, to begin with, but the lack of payment options that support that Turkish lira makes it even worse than it has to be! There is a minuscule number of payment services accepted in online casinos that provide Turkish lira banking. Naturally, it’s not hard to assume why this is. On top of the country’s strict gambling policies, the currency has been valued shockingly low multiple times since its start. Since it’s not viewed in the best light worldwide, it’s not too popular with international companies.
At the moment, there’s only one payment option out there that allows these transactions in the Turkish lira. If you want to learn more about it, here’s a bit about how it works below:
- MaldoPay: MaldoPay isn’t your traditional payment service. Unlike most popular options you’re familiar with, the service works as a payment gateway that incorporates several other well-known methods! The good news is, MaldoPay gives players a chance to transact using bank cards, eVouchers, and even cryptocurrencies! Because of its nature, the pros and cons of using this service vary. Players need to keep in mind that MaldoPay is just a connection between the player and casino, everything else relates to the specific method you’ve chosen within it.
Gambling Laws About Turkish Lira
Turkish players will be disappointed to learn that all gambling in the country is limited to a single operator. The IDDAA is the only company that provides gambling services in Turkey, and they exclusively include sports betting. All other online gambling has been prohibited since 2007, leaving most players in the region dissatisfied with their options. Unfortunately, the country is pretty strict about enforcing its policies. There are countless bans and blacklists for foreign operators, so any attempts at reaching them are practically pointless.
What makes matters worse is that even if players manage to reach a foreign online casino that accepts Turkish citizens, it’s in their best interest to refrain from playing there. On top of the bans and blacklists, the country has massive fines in store for players that gamble anywhere other than the IDDAA. These fines range between the equivalent of $50,000 and $275,000 in Turkish lira. Compared to other worldwide locations, these fines are harsh, to say the least.
The only bit of good news about the gambling situation in Turkey is the player protection in place for users that bet in IDDAA. The IDDAA is known for timely payouts and solid Customer Support. It might not present players with the best odds, but it’s decent enough to provide a good time. Regarding licensing and the state of gambling in the future, there isn’t much to say. The country is very effective in maintaining the monopoly on gambling, so the chances of licensing other operators seem unlikely. For now, gambling fans have to settle for the sole option available.
