In Butterfly Staxx, the design team at NetEnt chooses a simple theme and gets a result that is aesthetically beautiful but ultimately disappointing. Though the butterfly re-spin feature and the cocoon bonus round are worthwhile contributions, base play this five reel, four line slot is unremarkable, and the bonus feature, while fun, can take a very long time to trigger. Nevertheless, the unique features and lovely design merit a closer look.
Theme
Butterflies and their world provide the thematic basis for this slot. A shimmering, yellow butterfly is the highest-valued symbol and accompanied by flowers of various shapes and colors as well as the playing card values ace through jack. A glowing lavender flower acts as scatter, and a glowing purple and yellow acts as wild, substituting for all symbols except scatter. The reels are situated before a beautiful sunset landscape, with stars shining and life teeming everywhere.
Betting Options and Functions
The betting format of Butterfly Staxx is a bit unusual. There are 40 fixed paylines, but both coin value and bet level can be adjusted to vary the size of the bet. Bet level is defined as the number of coins bet per two bet lines adjustable from one to ten (20 coins per level, for a minimum bet level of 20 coins and maximum of 200 coins). The coins can, in turn, be set to a value ranging from 0.01 to 2.00 times the betting currency. With these factors in play, the overall bet per spin is adjustable from a minimum of 0.20 to 400.00 times the betting currency.
A sophisticated autospin feature is available, complete with loss limits, win limits and other possible modifications. A pop-up menu explains symbols and bonuses, while an in-depth description of the game’s finer points can be launched separately.
Features
By far, the most interesting element of base play is the butterfly respin feature. Whenever an entire reel is taken up by butterfly symbols, a respin is triggered, with all butterfly symbols on the reels flying over to the left of the reels: these butterflies remain in place while the reels spin again. Should any additional butterfly symbols appear among the new symbols, they will also fly over to the left side of the reels, triggering another respin. It’s possible to see an entire game screen filled with butterfly symbols in this way, which would trigger the highest payout available in base play.
When three or more scatter symbols appear on the reels, Butterfly Spins are triggered. During these free spins, the reels are taken up entirely by cocoons: some of them will be active, with a butterfly emerging, taking its place on the reels, and then flying to the left as they do in the base play respin feature. Similarly, those butterflies will then remain on the reels as the next free spin begins. As the bonus round progresses and the reels fill with more and more butterflies, players can expect massive payouts.
Our Take
While the butterfly respin feature and Butterfly Spins are novel and fun game elements, Butterfly Staxx ultimately disappoints. Free spins come along very seldom, and there is simply not enough variety within the base play to keep things interesting. The theoretical return to player is 96.8%, however, which is certainly more than respectable and will keep many players happily spinning the reels, seeking cocoons.

Not my favorite netent game but anyway i play it always when i am playing netent games. It looks very good, has nice sounds and very good wins if you are lucky that day. Its not easy task to hit a bonus game, if its cold and you can get a bonus for a long time so better leave this game.

I am not too keen about this game. I have played it many times and I just can't seem to win. So far I have seen only a few high winning screenshots but for me it has never paid decently. I think that design looks really nice and colors are great but payout wise I don't think it has good potential.
