It’s hard to say where the developers were heading with a game like this.
On one hand:
It’s nice to see companies like Playson take influence from outside the trade. Definitely, games like Candy Crush have played a part when designing this particular slot.
The name itself might sound problematic in the area of target audiences and playstyles, however…
…it is nothing but a nice and relaxing spinner for casual and experienced mature gamblers.
Theme
No reels here!
Like I said, the game has received influence outside the traditional themes of slots. Mobile gaming is on the forefront. Of course, the game is still entirely random in nature, but at least it does things a bit differently.
The play area is hexagonal in nature, and comes with 61 individual positions. Instead of pay-lines, the game uses cluster pays. If this sounds interesting then you should give it a look.
Betting Options and Functions
The possible bets range between 0.25 and 100 coins per spin. There are no pay-lines to worry about. Instead, the game uses the cluster pay system which requires the symbols to be next to each other to count for a win.
A minimum of five matching symbols are needed to land a win and nine or more symbols pay out the maximum. The prizes are quite small, which means that the special features are needed to land any decent pots of coins.
The game interface is very simple and very fitting for mobile devices. All the options are easily within reach and the display only shows what needs to be shown.
Features
First of all:
Cascading symbols are of course a thing here. It seems that all the cluster-pay games use this same system. Whenever a win combination lands the prize is paid, the symbols are removed and new ones drop in place. Crystal Crush adds to this Crystal Bonuses. This simply means that as you gather wins you also gather crystalized symbols next to them. Gathering enough of them will activate different bonuses.
There are six different levels for these bonuses. Each level grants either a multiplier for all future wins on that same round or adds random wilds on the reels.
The sixth level, for example, turns all the symbols of that colour into wilds. Naturally, after each round, the progress is reset. There is also a random feature that can add two levels to any of the bonuses, in case there was no win on that spin.
Our Take
There are a few games out there like this(Bedlam Reactors being one of the first) but by no means too many. The slot breaks the usual convention of reels, though this comes with the cost of lower basic wins. You pretty much have to score several cascading wins to make a profit out of this slot.
Still, if you are looking for a bit different game, this slot might be worth playing.
