Mississippi Stud
Mississippi Stud by Michael Shackleford aka Wizard of Odds
Mississippi Stud is a simple game to play that offers a good value if played properly. Much like Let it Ride, there is no dealer hand to beat. The player will be paid according to the poker value of his own five-card hand. Where skill comes in is the player's opportunity to raise his bet as cards are revealed. The idea is to have a big bet on the good hands and to fold or bet small on the bad ones.
Strategy
The following strategy is optimal for the usual 2-3-4-6-10-40-100-500 pay table. A "made hand" is one that will at least push. Some situations refer to the number of points in the player's hand. The following is how many points each card is worth.
- J to A = 2 points
- 6 to 10 = 1 point
- 2 to 5 = 0 points
2 Cards
- Raise 3x with any pair.
- Raise 1x with at least one at least two points.
- Raise 1x with 6-5 suited.
- Fold all others.
3 Cards
- Raise 3x with any made hand.
- Raise 3x with royal flush draw.
- Raise 3x with straight flush draw, with no gaps, 5-6-7 or higher.
- Raise 3x with straight flush draw, with one gap, and at least one high card.
- Raise 3x with straight flush draw, with two gaps, and at least two high cards.
- Raise 1x with any other three suited cards.
- Raise 1x with a low pair.
- Raise 1x with at least three points.
- Raise 1x with a straight draw, with no gaps, 4-5-6 or higher.
- Raise 1x with a straight draw, with one gap, and two mid cards.
- Fold all others.
4 Cards
- Raise 3x with any made hand.
- Raise 3x with any four to a flush.
- Raise 3x with four to an outside straight, 8 high or better.
- Raise 1x with any other straight draw.
- Raise 1x with a low pair.
- Raise 1x with at least four points.
- Raise 1x with three mid cards (6 to 10) and at least one previous 3x raise.
- Fold all others.
- I know this strategy looks complicated, but most hands will be obvious. Then you will see the same
- borderline situations over and over. However, once in a while you'll get a tricky hand, so have this
- strategy at hand to get you through it correctly.
Odds
The ratio of money the player can expect to lose to his Ante bet is 4.91%, following the pay table previously mentioned. That may sound average, but after all the raising the player's final bet will be 3.59 times his Ante bet, on average. This makes the Element of Risk 4.91%/3.59 = 1.37%, which is better than most games. Compare that to 5.26% in double-zero roulette.
Mississippi Stud Online
As usual, online casinos are at least a decade behind the times compared to major land-based casinos. In the world of Internet casinos, you will easily find plenty of dead or dying games like Caribbean Stud Poker and Let it Ride, but the number of software providers offering Mississippi Stud, even under another name, as far as I know, is zero. Maybe I should give the online casinos credit for not stealing a licensed game by Shuffle Master/Scientific Games, but that has not generally stopped them before. Meanwhile, until they catch up, you may play for free on the demo game at Wizard of Odds.
