Legislators in the Czech Republic lower house initially approved a proposed bill to increase tax on winnings from lotteries, sport betting and slot machines starting in 2016.
The bill has passed the first of three readings and proposes to increase the tax on winnings on lotteries and sports wagers from 20 percent to 23 percent and 28 percent on slot machines.
Additionally, the daily tax on each slot machine will increase from 55 crowns from 80.
The bill has two additional lower house readings to pass and the upper chamber of parliament before being signed by the president. Based on the coalition government's large majority it is likely that the bill will be signed.

This country as well as others have seemed to do this a lot and raise taxes at every given chance. I find it very ironic that usually the big controversy is always gambling ...so many against it most times , gambling gets the bad wrap but it is the very first place they will tax and a lot of it . Tax laws in different countries...

I find it very ironic that usually the big controversy is always gambling ...so many against it most times , gambling gets the bad wrap but it is the very first place they will tax and a lot of it . Tax laws in different countries vary and for their own reasons , crazy to me . Example : in US you are taxed on a lottery ticket win over 2000. In Canada you are not taxed at all for any lotto ticket winning of any amount .

I think it is just shocking that countries can do tax on gambling winnings. Think about also this in US. How about all the money people lose do they then get a tax rebate or what? I really hope this will never happen to UK. Fine they have got their new gambling commission now that takes 10% of earnings from bookies and...

I think that is fine as yeah it is earnings for them. But don't take money of people that wins that is just theft and greedy people in my opinion

what on earth?! 23 and 28 percent taxes on winning that are a result of complete luck ( well sport wagers comes along with a bit skill also) How greedy is the Czech government :D All winning are tax free at least in Finland as far they are won from a EU licensed casinos. The lottory has taxes in here but the company that...

Big winnings like in the lottery is one thing. But the vast majority of sports and slots winnings are relatively small. And yes, being able to offset wins, by deducting (at least some) proven losses is a benefit to U.S.A. players that have made only modest cashouts.

Most of the time, it's your average, mostly middle class player that hits these big slot jackpots, wherever they might live. So getting lucky isn't quite as lucky if you live in the Czech Republic. You know what they say, "the two things you can count on are death and taxes." Hopefully, the lucky winner will be able to...
Most of the time, it's your average, mostly middle class player that hits these big slot jackpots, wherever they might live. So getting lucky isn't quite as lucky if you live in the Czech Republic. You know what they say, "the two things you can count on are death and taxes." Hopefully, the lucky winner will be able to find a way to shield some of his or her winnings from that big bad tax collector, just like the already rich do.

I guess a tax on gambling winnnings might be seen as the easiest and least controversial type of tax a legislature could pass. Most people might think that gambling winnings is not an undue burden on a lucky winner and that the winnings are a windfall that society could justly benefit from. It's funny that there seems to be no organized political group standing up for gamblers...for example should gamblers get a higher tax deduction on their well documented losses? This would seem reasonable if winnings are subject to a higher tax.. But which organization is making that case in the interest of gamblers?
