Alberta has confirmed that its regulated online gambling market will open on July 13, marking a major shift in how the province manages digital betting. Interest has grown from major operators, including DraftKings, which plans to enter the new system.
The province has received applications from 32 groups. Of those, 20 have paid a required $150,000 deposit, indicating early commitment as the launch approaches.
Service Alberta Minister Dale Nally pointed to participation from companies such as DraftKings and theScore, describing them as “responsible operators” preparing to enter the regulated space.
Regulatory Framework and Market Development
The system has been in development since last year, following legislative changes allowing private operators to offer online gambling legally in Alberta. The province will become the second in Canada to launch such a market after Ontario in 2022.
A key goal is to reduce activity in the unregulated “grey” market, which officials estimate accounts for around 70% of online gambling in Alberta.
Advertising rules will restrict marketing aimed at minors and ban current professional athletes from promotions. Former athletes may appear in responsible gambling campaigns.
Operator Interest and Market Entry Plans
DraftKings, an American-based company, has confirmed plans to offer both online sports betting and casino products in Alberta once the market becomes active. The company also indicated that the timing of the launch aligns with preparations around the FIFA World Cup, which will take place across North America.
Other operators, including theScore and several additional applicants, are also preparing to enter the regulated system. The province has indicated that interest from these companies demonstrates early engagement with the compliance and safety standards required under the new rules.
Minister Nally noted that 20 of the 32 applicant groups have already paid the deposit required to advance in the licensing process. He said this level of participation suggests a strong focus on meeting regulatory expectations, particularly in relation to player safety.
“I would say that those 20 companies are committed to player safety, and that’s good news,” Nally said.
Policy Goals and Safety Focus
Officials say taxation will apply, but the focus remains consumer protection. Nally acknowledged the tension in regulating gambling, saying: “If there was a red button that I could push that would stop online gambling, I would push that button. But it doesn’t exist.”
He added that policymakers are left with a choice between ignoring the sector or implementing regulatory safeguards to manage it.
National Context and Market Positioning
Once launched, Alberta will become the second Canadian province to introduce a fully regulated online gambling market. Ontario established its system in April 2022, setting a precedent for provincial-level oversight of digital wagering platforms.
DraftKings noted that Alberta will represent its second Canadian market and said its entry aligns with broader expansion plans across North America. The upcoming World Cup is also expected to coincide with early market activity, adding further attention to the province’s launch period.
With regulatory structures in place and operator applications underway, Alberta’s planned July launch positions the province for a significant transition in how online gambling is managed and accessed.
