Alberta has finalized the responsible gaming standards that will apply when its regulated online gambling market opens on Monday, introducing a province-wide framework that includes a centralized self-exclusion program, mandatory player protection measures and accreditation requirements for licensed operators.
The Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC) finalized standards first introduced in January. The framework covers protections for minors, self-exclusion procedures and responsible gambling tools that licensed operators must provide, drawing on measures already used in jurisdictions including Ontario.
Self-Exclusion Program Takes Effect at Launch
One of the most significant additions is a centralized self-exclusion system that will be available when the market begins operating. Ontario introduced a comparable program only in May this year, four years after opening its regulated online gambling sector.
The Alberta self-exclusion website provides resources and frequently asked questions for residents.
Every licensed operator must actively promote the program and ensure players can easily access it through their online gambling platform. Companies must also void and refund eligible unsettled futures wagers if a customer enters the self-exclusion program before those bets have been settled.
Alongside self-exclusion, operators must comply with broader responsible gambling obligations intended to help customers make informed decisions and access support when needed.
Another key requirement comes through Alberta iGaming Corporation's partnership with the Responsible Gambling Council, announced in February. Under that agreement, every operator entering the market must obtain RG Check certification before offering services in the province.
"By requiring RG Check accreditation, we're ensuring that every iGaming operator in our market has demonstrated their commitment to player safety through independent verification of their responsible gambling programs," said Dan Keene, AiGC CEO.
RG Check evaluates operators using evidence-based standards covering governance, player safeguards, staff training and marketing practices. The Responsible Gambling Council will also carry out ongoing assessments so operators maintain the accreditation required to remain active in Alberta.
Calls for Stronger Responsible Gambling Communication
As Alberta prepares for private operators to enter the market, industry commentary has argued that responsible gambling messaging should receive greater attention if it is to influence player behaviour.
The opinion argues that information about safer gambling competes with advertising and entertainment designed to attract players, making it difficult for conventional public service messages to stand out. It suggests responsible gambling campaigns deserve the same creative effort and media investment as promotional advertising.
The commentary points to BetMGM's campaign featuring Connor McDavid as an example of using humour and high production values to encourage players to pause before placing bets, learn about responsible gambling tools and make informed decisions.
It also highlights research indicating that messages encouraging practical actions, such as setting betting plans or deposit limits, tend to perform better than general warnings. According to the opinion piece, BetMGM's 2024 responsible gambling campaign in Ontario coincided with a 38% year-over-year increase in deposit limit use and a 55% increase in stake limit use on the operator's provincial platform.
The commentary concludes that as legal online gambling expands in Alberta, responsible gambling initiatives should become a visible part of the player experience rather than remain limited to disclaimers or fine print.

The centralized self-exclusion system is probably the biggest win here. It's frustrating when players have to exclude themselves from every site individually, so having one system across all licensed operators just makes sense. Hopefully other regulated markets start treating that as the standard too.

Good move by Alberta to have self-exclusion and RG Check rules ready from launch, not years later
