The Danish Gambling Authority has published its 2024 annual report detailing its efforts to combat illegal gambling in Denmark. This year’s report highlights a new partnership with the streaming platform Twitch and an increased focus on the emerging issue of gambling involving the virtual currency "Robux."
Authority's Annual Report on Illegal Gambling Measures
Each year, the Danish Gambling Authority releases a comprehensive review outlining its regulatory efforts and clarifying Danish gambling laws. The 2024 edition provides insights into the authority’s latest strategies to curb unauthorized gambling activities, including new enforcement actions and industry collaborations.
A significant development in 2024 is the authority’s partnership with Twitch, a popular live-streaming platform. This collaboration enables the authority to report and request the removal of illegal gambling content on Twitch, similar to its existing arrangements with Apple, Facebook, and Google. By extending these enforcement capabilities to Twitch, the authority aims to minimize Danish users’ exposure to unlawful gambling promotions on the platform.
Another focus of the 2024 report is the rise of 'Robux' betting, an illegal gambling practice involving the in-game currency Robux from the popular online game Roblox. This form of gambling occurs when Robux is used as a stake or a prize in betting activities, often through third-party websites targeting young players.
Since Robux can be exchanged for real money via the Roblox Developer Exchange Program (DevEx), the Danish Gambling Authority categorizes its use in gambling under the country’s existing betting and casino laws. The authority has identified multiple unlicensed websites facilitating these activities and is working to enforce legal compliance.
Legal Rulings and Public Involvement
In August 2024, the Court of Frederiksberg ruled that gambling sites offering Robux-based betting in Danish must comply with Denmark’s gambling regulations. This decision reinforces the authority’s stance on illegal gambling and strengthens its ability to act against unauthorized operators.
The Danish Gambling Authority encourages the public to report suspicious gambling activities to assist in its enforcement efforts, ensuring that Danish consumers—especially younger audiences—are protected from illegal gambling practices.
