A week after Google AdWords announced a total ban on gambling adverts in Italy, another social medium with over 2.23 billion active users changed its policy as well. Facebook will no longer promote gambling products and services in one of Europe’s most famous countries on the Mediterranean coastline.
The company started informing all operators in the country that the policy regarding advertising gambling services has been changed thanks to the recently approved Dignity Decree. As a result, gaming businesses are no longer allowed to advertise activities on the popular social network in Italy which is also from now on under Facebook’s general terms of use:
“Adverts that promote or facilitate online real money gambling, real money games of skill or real money lotteries, including online real money casinos, sport books, bingo or poker, are only allowed with prior written permission.”
All previously issued permissions regarding Italian operators have been revoked by Facebook one week after Google AdWords decided to bar gambling adverts that aren’t in compliance with the Decreto dignità. However, the full ban in Italy will take its toll on January 1st, 2019 covering both the pages and ads with same demographic targets.
History Repeated?
Earlier this year, the largest social media platform already issued a similar ban – only it wasn’t on gambling, but Bitcoin. Constant spamming and misleading content have led to a large number of fake promotional offerings, allowing scammers to earn large sums of money on crypto enthusiasts.
Google, Twitter and Snapchat soon joined the medium’s efforts and put a hold on crypto ads as well. Nevertheless, at the end of June 2018, Zuckerberg finally decided it’s time to ease the ban, allowing some adverts related to crypto to go live again.
Honestly speaking, initial coin offerings or ICOs are still prohibited and only the companies with a valid onboarding request and clearly specified kinds of services are granted certain rights to advertise. Blockchain enthusiasts and crypto investors will have to be patient at the time being.

What about other pesky ads? There's no end to them and nothing really helps long term. It's easy to just jump on the bandwagon without thinking, though I have to admit some casinos are taking things too far when it comes to advertisement.

I have seen a lot of unwanted ads on my facebook page and it is hard to remove or block those ads, it kept coming back and I kept blocking them and marked them as unwanted but nothing worked, I have deleted my facebook account(s) many times and now finally it worked, no thanks to Facebook, thanks to FireFox web browser, this webbrowser blocked the unwanted ads, in fact it blocks all ads, I don't see a single ad in my facebook page. That aside, if gambling or in this case online gambling is prohibited in Italy, I think it shouldn't be advertised either so in this casino I don't mind Facebook blocked online gambling ad from appearing in their page.
