Back NBA Playoffs Injury: Golden State Warriors Center DeMarcus Cousins Out Indefinitely with Torn Quad

On Monday April 15th, 2019, during game two of the NBA Playoffs in the series between the Golden State Warriors and the Los Angeles Clippers, DeMarcus Cousins tore quadricep muscles on his left leg rendering him unable to participate in upcoming games. The Golden State Warriors have said that he will be out from playing indefinitely but is due to begin rehabbing this current injury immediately.

This quadricep injury occurred during a non-contact play in which the player was running down a loose ball in the first quarter of the second playoff game for the Golden State Warriors this season. The team was winning this game by 31 points in the third quarter only to watch their lead dwindle away as they lost game one to the Los Angeles Clippers 135 – 131.

The Details

According to ESPN, “He (Cousins) knocked away a pass from Clippers forward Danilo Gallinari. As Cousins tried to chase down the ball, he fell to the floor. He tried to get up and keep going, but once he rose to his feet, he immediately called to be taken out of the game. He then gingerly made his way back to the Warriors' locker room with team medical personnel.”

Cousins’ Achilles Injury

“Cousins missed almost a full year of play with a torn left Achilles tendon suffered last season, when he played for New Orleans. He signed a one-year deal with the Warriors, expecting that a healthy return to play would catapult him back into the free-agent market this summer.”

Free Agency

Cousins is known as one of the best big men in the NBA, but he has a history of being prone to injuries. Although the severity of his current injury is not known at the moment, it seems as if he will miss the rest of the season with his team. He will become a free agent after this year, and should be healthy for the start of the 2019 – 2020 season. It’s likely an NBA franchise will sign him to a new contract before next season.

Chances are Cousins will receive offers from teams for a short-term deal as he has not been able to play very much over the last few seasons. He could very well sign a deal similar to the one-year contract he is currently under with the Warriors.

The Warriors without Key Player

Although the team has played the majority of this NBA season without DeMarcus Cousins, they will miss his defense, rebounding, inside scoring ability, and his overall intimidating presence on the basketball court. Hopefully Golden State will be able to contend for their third straight NBA championship without Cousins as they are a fun team to watch especially in the NBA playoffs.
