Ontario has introduced a centralized online gambling self-exclusion system designed to allow players to block themselves from every regulated iGaming platform operating in the province. The new platform, called BetGuard, launched through iGaming Ontario on behalf of the provincial government.
BetGuard is available to anyone aged 19 or older and covers all regulated online gambling operators in Ontario, including the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation’s digital platforms. Once a person registers through the system, participating operators receive notification that the individual has self-excluded from the province’s regulated market.
The platform also prevents users from opening new gambling accounts or receiving marketing communications from licensed operators during the exclusion period. Individuals can choose exclusion periods lasting six months, one year, five years, or a customized timeframe.
According toiGaming Ontario, the system aims to provide a single access point for players seeking a break from online gambling rather than requiring separate exclusion requests at multiple operators.
New System Applies Across Ontario Operators
The launch forms part of Ontario’s responsible gambling framework as the province’s regulated iGaming market continues to expand. Officials stated that more than 75 licensed gambling sites currently operate under Ontario’s regulatory structure.
“BetGuard allows anyone 19 years or older to opt out of all regulated online gambling in Ontario,” iGaming Ontario stated in its announcement. “It’s their choice and it’s both simple and secure.”
The organization also said that “every regulated igaming site in Ontario will know they are centrally self-excluded” once a player enrolls in the program.
Joseph Hillier, president and CEO of iGaming Ontario, said the platform was developed around player choice and market-wide coverage.
“BetGuard is designed with one simple principle in mind: if you need take a break from the entire regulated igaming market, you can,” Hillier said. “Player choice is key to the sustainability of our market, and that includes the choice to opt out.”
Hillier added that iGaming Ontario worked with government agencies, operators and responsible gambling specialists while developing the system.

Ontario Minister of Tourism, Culture and Gaming Stan Cho described the launch as an important addition to the province’s responsible gambling measures.
“The Ontario government is committed to responsible gambling. As online gaming continues to grow in popularity, the launch of BetGuard is an important step forward in helping people play safely and responsibly across more than 75 regulated sites,” Cho said.
He added: “Strong regulation, paired with tools like BetGuard, ensures Ontario’s iGaming sector continues to put player health and safety first. Congratulations to iGaming Ontario on this significant milestone.”
Sarah McCarthy, CEO of the Responsible Gambling Council, called centralized self-exclusion “one of the most effective tools we have in gambling harm prevention.”
