Back Police Bust Gaming Criminal Group in California; Illegal Casino Closed

Law enforcement forces in California busted an illegal gambling ring last month. The ring has been operating all around Los Angeles. Police arrested 35 people for different crimes including illegal gambling, illegal drug possession, and firearm sales. According to law enforcement officials, they are serious about breaking the ring. The operation was followed by another one in South Bakersfield where police unveiled more illegal activities.

Details

The arrested individuals have been running the illegal operation from a gambling parlor, equipped with a table gaming console for eight users and six computers for illegal purposes. Police have found four guns and 3000 ammunition rounds.

Who Was Arrested

As part of the intervention, four individuals have been arrested, including key operators James and Jeffrey Hern. James was charged for “operating an illegal gambling operation, and conspiracy to commit a crime,” while Jeffrey was charged with “operating an illegal gambling casino, receiving stolen property, convicted felon in possession of a firearm, convicted felon in possession of ammunition, and conspiracy to commit a crime.” However, the police didn't find any relation between the main operators.

Two other individuals, Angelica Crotwell and Maryanne Yeakley, have been arrested and accused of misdemeanour warrants without having anything with the operation of illegal venues.

Statement

Reacting to police action, Kern County Sheriff’s Office commented:

“The execution of the search warrant was the culmination of a week-long investigation by Metro Patrol deputies into the gambling activities at the location. Deputies located an eight-person ‘Fish Table’ gaming console and six computer terminals in the building.”

Previous situation

Kern County forces have already made several interventions on illegal gambling rings. A similar operation took place in Bakersfield last April when police took into custody several people and found $5000 cash and 255g of drugs.

California Casinos

California doesn't have commercial gambling facilities but it offers several tribal casinos. At the moment, there are 70 venues which also includes the Bakersfield complex where the recent apprehensions took place.

According to the California Nations Indian Gaming Association (CNIGA) report, gambling expansion will not happen soon:

“CNIGA does not support any expansion of gaming in California, including sports betting, until the for-profit, commercial card rooms stop their illegal practices, including constitutionally prohibited banked games. A legitimate discussion on sports betting could then proceed as long as tribal exclusivity is maintained.”
