Back Tennis: Novak Djokovic wins historic Wimbledon title

World number one Novak Djokovic survived an epic match and rescued two match points before defeating veteran Roger Federer in the Wimbledon final on Sunday. The match went on for 4 hours and 57 minutes, becoming the longest ever Wimbledon final. Djokovic secured the victory in a final-set tie-break, claiming his fifth Wimbledon title and 16th Grand Slam crown. Roger Federer had won this tournament 8 times and he has 20 Grand Slam titles to his name.

The final score of the match was 7-6(5), 1-6, 7-6(4), 4-6, 13-12(3) and it marked Djokovic's third triumph in the last four major tournaments. The crucial moment in the final set was when Federer was leading 8-7 and 40-15 on his serve. The Swiss had two championship points but was unable to convert them, allowing Djokovic a way back into the match. Both players delivered outstanding tennis throughout the match, but Djokovic was the master of the tie-breaks, he won all three as he seemed to keep his composure a lot better in those decisive moments. Now the Serb is two Grand Slam titles behind Rafael Nadal, the Spaniard has won 18, and four behind Federer.

"In these kinds of matches, you work for, you live for, they give sense and they give value to every minute you spend on the court training and working to get yourself in this position and play the match with one of your greatest rivals of all-time," Djokovic said after the match. "I'm just obviously thrilled and overjoyed with emotions to be sitting here in front of you as a winner. It was one shot away from losing the match, as well. This match had everything. It could have gone easily his way."

The next Grand Slam tournament is the U.S. Open at Flushing Meadows next month. Last year Novak Djokovic won it with a straight-sets victory over Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro in the final, while in 2017 it was Rafael Nadal who won it. Novak Djokovic is now 5/4 at Bet365 to win the 2019 U.S. Open, Rafael Nadal is 4/1 to win it and Roger Federer is 11/2 to claim the title at Flushing Meadows.
