United Kingdom’s Betting and Gaming Council has announced the roll out of a GBP 10 million gambling education and support programme in this country.
This independent education programme will be delivered by charities GamCare and YGAM that will ensure that all 11-19 year olds across the UK have access to gambling awareness education. Members of Betting and Gaming Council will provide independent funding of the programme.
Educating Youth
As the official statement says…
…” the launch of a £10 million independent gambling education initiative will equip a generation of young people to better understand the risks associated with gambling and engage with gambling products and environments in an informed way, it was announced today.”
Betting and Gaming Council’s programme is a part of the BGC Safer Gambling Commitments that were announced in November 2019.
The scheme will involve direct provision of education to 120,000 young people as well as train over 100,000 professionals that deliver education to young people including teachers, youth workers and mental health practitioners.
This UK-wide initiative will contain these measures:
- England, Wales and Northern Ireland youth will get at least one session of gambling awareness education during their secondary education.
- All teachers, youth workers and other professionals working with young people should have access to information about the risks of gambling https://lcb.org/gamblinghelp
- Parents and families should have access to information about young people’s gambling, how to keep young people safe
Statements From Those Involved
CEO of Betting and Gaming Council, Michael Dugher, said:
“As the new standards body representing most of the regulated industry, the BGC is delighted to be supporting this fantastic initiative. Educating our young people is vital if we are to ensure that they are better informed and fully aware of the potential risks. It’s also essential that those who are teaching them are fully trained and able to look out for the tell-tale signs of any gambling-related harm and how to access help if required.
[…] This important project and investment is part of our ongoing determination at the BGC to promote safer gambling and to further drive up standards.”
Founder and CEO of YGAM, Lee Willows, added:
“Building upon our five-year track record of training professionals who have influence over young people’s learning, we are delighted to be working with GamCare, the Betting & Gaming Council and their members and our various external evaluation partners to scale our geographical reach to deliver this ambitious programme. Raising awareness and harm-prevention education is an important component to reduce gambling-related harms.”
Anna Hammings, CEO of GamCare, said:
“We are delighted to be working with YGAM and extending this much needed programme. We believe that gambling education should have parity with education around other risky behaviours and the extension of this programme will help us take a significant step towards achieving that aim.”

I'm positively surprised by this initiative. I can agree with Dzile, it's certainly necessary to educate the younger population because I have a feeling that more and more of them are gambling especially under the influence of alcohol or PAS.

Wow! This idea or concept is nothing short of brilliant in my opinion. I hope other organizations countries catch on and follow suit because it's much needed to start young for people to grasp the concept adult should be able to make their own decisions get an education is very powerful and it was once educated if you still decide to make the decision to do this or that seems perfectly acceptable. Of course it's going to take some time to see how it actually pans out and if it actually does have an impact on the lives of you know adolescents turning into adults going to take some time but I don't see where it possibly could hurt anything except perhaps the gambling industry, which we know won't go under no matter how much edjucation is provided, numbers don't lie and the House, always wins!
