2020’s first month saw numerous changes in legislation and regulatory framework for multiple markets and jurisdictions across the globe.

LCB is bringing you up-to-date with these changes, according to every specific region, as they happened in January.

US iGaming Updates

Michigan: The Stars Group has entered into the agreement with Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians to operate real-money online betting, poker and casino in this stats. Michigan Gaming Control Board says that completion of mobile sports wagering and online casino rules-making will take about a year.

New York: SB18 for legalization of online poker was reintroduced by Senator Addabbo. Also, Governor Cuomo has announced that his 2021 draft budget proposal and decided not to regulate online sports betting.

Illinois: The first phase of sports betting licensing process was launched by The Gaming Board as it began accepting master sports betting licenses applications.

Colorado: Since releasing draft regulations in November, Colorado’s regulator has said it received 12 betting license applications. Final regulations are to be presented in February, before May 2020 launch.

Pennsylvania: Mobile betting was launched by FanDuel and ValleyForge Casino.

Georgia: 64% of people in this state support the casino legislation. Sports betting legislation was supported by 57% of people. Also, The Atlanta Motor Speedway has announced plans to establish an entegrated casino resort at Hampton.

Vermont:Senators Sirotkin and Sears have filed a sports betting bill SB213 that offers these services as mobile betting exclusively since this state has no betting and gambling facilities.

Kentucky: Legislation to authorize sports betting, interactive poker and daily fantasy sports was profiled by Rep Koenig. BR 364 is about retail and online sports betting, while online poker would be offered through contracts between regulator and operators.

European iGaming Updates

Belgium: Belgian regulators are considering advertising restrictions for betting operators, including brans on sponsorships and during sports broadcasts.

Germany: Online casino games legislation was agreed by 16 landers, as well as poker games, under new Interstate Treaty. It will set a maximum slot betting stakes at EUR1 as well as no autospins and no jackpots.

Greece: In October 2019, Greece has proposed the regulation of online gaming. It was passed to the European Commission and there will be a standstill period until April 2020.

Serbia: There is a great progress of licensing commercial onshore operators, as Serbian Games of Chance Administration has consulted on the new draft law on gambling, with significantly more social responsibility measures.

Spain: It was announced that gambling ads will need to conform to the same restrictions as tobacco ads while an independent consumer watchdog has called for prohibition for credit card use in gambling.

UK: UKGC has banned the use of credit cards in gambling from April 14th. Also, The Gambling Commission has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Australian Transaction Reports and Analysis Centre to allow both organizations to share regulatory and compliance information related to money laundering.

Asia and the Rest of the World

Japan: Four opposition parties have submitted legislation calling for a repeal of the 2016 IR Promotion Act and the 2018 IR Implementation Act. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe announced that his government will go ahead with promoting the establishment of integrated resorts in the country.

Australia: The Australian Parliament approved legislation to establish the country’s National Self-Exclusion Register. The country’s government said it filled a “critical gap” in the country’s consumer protection safeguards.

Nigeria: The Nigerian National Lottery Regulatory Commission has prohibited the operation, promotion and sale of tickets of ‘unapproved foreign lottery’ games, after instances of operators failing to pay out winnings.
