So apparently the third Monday of January has a reputation as the “saddest day of the year.” Yup, Blue Monday is here. While experts say it’s not scientifically proven (it actually started as a marketing idea), the timing still makes sense. Post-holiday bills, broken New Year’s resolutions, cold weather, and way too little sunlight can definitely mess with our mood.
Some mental health professionals agree that January can feel heavy for a lot of people. Less daylight can affect serotonin levels, winter isolation hits harder, and the pressure to suddenly “fix your life” in the new year doesn’t help either.
Some solid, realistic tips to get through it:
✅Stick to a sleep routine (your brain loves consistency)
✅Lower the bar on goals - remember that small wins still count
✅Get outside, even for 15–30 minutes
✅Move your body, even a short walk helps
✅Stay connected and plan at least one thing to look forward to
✅Drop the perfectionism (seriously)
The biggest takeaway? You’re not alone. Feeling a mid-winter slump is super common, and just knowing others feel it too can be reassuring.
How’s everyone else handling Blue Monday this year? Any go-to mood boosters? 💙
