Is White Elephant Taking Over Secret Santa?

It seems like White Elephant  gift exchanges are becoming more popular these days, especially at workplaces and among friends. The games are very different:

🎅 Secret Santa is about thoughtfulness, picking a gift specifically for someone.

🐘 White Elephant is more chaotic and humorous, with swapping and stealing gifts.

Do you think White Elephant is slowly replacing Secret Santa as the go-to holiday game? Or will Secret Santa always have its place? 

I’m curious to hear if you’ve noticed this shift and what your take is on the trend. Personally, I'm into Secret Santa variant! 🎁🎄

What's the most interesting or the silliest gift you received/ gave so far? 

I actually hadn't heard of White Elephant before, but I really love the idea, it sounds like a fun twist on traditional gift exchanges! I'd definitely be up for trying it sometime. My only small concern would be making sure everyone keeps the playful spirit of the game, so no one feels left out or disappointed. As long as everyone’s in it for the laughs, it seems like a great way to share some holiday fun! 

Yes, I totally agree, White Elephant can work only if the entire team is fine with a huge dose of unpredictability and well-prepared to get disappointed. Gift-stealing can easily go wrong, so I can totally picture an office fight in no time. 🥊🥷🤣🤣🤣 That's why I'm into Secret Santa, kinda feels safer. 

BTW, I forgot to add rules for those who're unsure how White Elephant works. Here are the essentials: 

Everyone participating is bringing wrapped, silly/themed gifts, drawing numbers for turn order, and taking turns opening presents. The fun starts when players can steal already opened gifts or pick a new one, creating a chain reaction; if your gift is stolen, you get to steal or pick another. Limits (like a gift being stolen only twice) are often set to keep it moving, ending when all gifts are opened and sometimes allowing the first player a final swap. 

Well, ive never heard of white elephant. But Secret Santa is a household name. It may phase out to some new gift swap eventually. But I doubt it will be any time soon. Most people value tradition over change. 

I totally agree, tradition really does matter. Things like Secret Santa stick around because they’re familiar and tied to shared memories, not just because they’re convenient. Even when new ideas come along, people usually hold on to what feels meaningful and established. Change might happen eventually, but traditions tend to fade slowly, if at all, especially when so many people enjoy keeping them alive.
