A history of elevators

I found this quite interesting:

1st Century BC: The Romans operate lifts using pulleys with human, animal and water power.

1800: Steam-driven lifts are in use in English factories. An expert operator controls each car by manipulating a rope that passes through it.

1853: Elisha Graves Otis unveils a safety device to prevent freefall, paving the way for passenger lifts.

Late 1800s: Stately "movable rooms" begin to appear in hotels and department stores - they feature cushioned benches and chandeliers.

1950s: Safety systems that automatically close both sets of doors eliminate the need for operators.

Future: Lifts may employ magnetic levitation technology - a design has also been trialled for a lift to move vertically and then horizontally to navigate larger skyscrapers.

When's the last time you got stuck in an elevator?

I remember being in such a situation when I was a kid, at a seaside hotel, with a bunch of very loud German tourists. I cried and puked on one of them

Very interesting facts. I got stuck in an elevator maybe once or twice mostly because I don't use them very often; only when I have to or I'm in a hurry.

I've never been stuck on one, but I've been on one that has stuck for other people.  It's also the last elevator I've been on.  At the Tower of the Americas in San Antonio.  With the window inside, you can see a lot of the sites as you ascend or descend.  A favorite tradition when you step off at the top is to look down the crack when the door opens.  Good for that 'woo-woo' feeling.

Never been stuck in an elevator. Thank goodness or I might have puked on someone too

Getting stuck in an elevator can conjure up other um er...... fantasies  ! I guess it all depends on how you look at it and who you are with. But for sure it can be scary too. 

That's a great point Lips. You should offer Life Coaching services. Not everyone thought of that.

Hmmm, well now that you mention it. Lock me in an elevator with the right person and I would be ok with it. I can't believe my mind didn't there. Leave it to lips

Found a good "trapped-in-the-elevator" story, made me laugh:

Brian Acott from the UK says: "I was once trapped in a lift in an old office block. I rang the alarm for ages but no one responded so, in a "Bruce Willis" moment, I forced the doors open - only to find I was just a couple of inches off the ground floor. I walked out with what little dignity I had left."

That was a funny store but I still wouldn't like to get stuck in a elevator, maybe in a glass wall elevator.
