A Short Story in Living Color

Just want to share a little story..

My brother whom i miss so much, rest in peace my love, i only screw up sometimes now lol, you always understood i am a woman with passion, emotions, feelings and curiosity, that i was never immune to any, nor was i perfect..i know damn well i got mean too.. disciplined and scolded evenly with love and patience, under the worst and best i was never abondoned, you brought out the best in me…~~ I Love You~~!

His memory brings me powerful lessons and understandings, one was this..

My brother always brought me roses, they were always of all colors, never all of one single color or variety. Once i went to the flower shop with him as he was getting roses for his woman, the rose arrangements were all in single color bunched together, he seemed discouraged with the arrangements. He asked the florist if he could have an arrangement with all colors of the roses, the florist complied with his wishes, went to the back and assembled a bouquet as requested, brought it out and set it on the counter.” How’s this?” the florist asked, my brother answered with “Magnifico!, Perfecto! , beautiful,Thank You”

I remember smiling at him and shaking my head, but as i looked at the bouquet and in the background i could see the single colored roses, though still very pretty, but so plain and colonized, seemly weak with no strength in their actual brilliance, there was a very big difference. I asked my brother.. because i’m curious, why he always goes out of his way to get roses of all colors, this is what he told me…
Maybe this means nothing to you, but it was served as a message to me when i was a child growing up. My grandmother and i were shopping, there was a lady in line who refused to go through the line at the check out because the clerk was “not her color” she demanded that the manager who was “her color” to touch her merchandise, she made a big scene in the store.. and i’ll never forget the look on the clerks face, there was a sadness and some shame, i could only imagine how he must of felt, not really knowing at the time why, but i could feel a sunken heart within me and my grandma.. but still he smiled warmly, checked, bagged and thank us all the same. We left and as we were driving i asked my grandma..”what happened?” He told me her answer was in Italian.

“si tratta di una preferenza orribile da pregiudizi, purtroppo alcuni sono insegnati che sia giusto, è l’ignoranza che manca la varietà della vita siamo benedetti con” ..How dare we or anyone insult our maker.. We are all beautiful, never forget that.

translates as best i can..” it is a horrible preference to be prejudice unfortunately some are taught this to be right, ignorance is why we miss the variety in life that we are blessed with”
The significance of the roses.. she said..
Just like red roses, they are beautiful, but aren’t always red.. some are pink, some are blue, some are yellow, some are white..but is there a special water for red roses? Do you set the red roses in a special place where the sun is better? Do you set red roses in the front of all the other colors? If red roses don’t get this different treatment, why should and do people?
At first glance, when we walked into the flowershop it was very beautiful, when she brought out the floral arrangement of roses my brother requested with the display of variety, together it became “Magnifico~!”

My brother told me he does this in remembrance of that clerk, his influence, how the clerk looked at him, he felt his pain..how he handle this with nobilty, humbleness, pride and a warm smile

So this is why i always got roses of all colors. This tradition my brother created will be carried on for the rest of my life and any and all descendents i make promise and do the same..

I do miss him very much, i could always lean and depend on him, now i'm on my own.. he taught me alot of things,things he told me about seemed insignificant back then or while he'd say it, then suddenly as life goes on those things he taught me pop up, makes it easy to handle when i reflect on him and his words..

Thank you for the story, it's full of meaning.
