  • sad  Just felt like writing about it,  my mother has been diagnosed 1 year ago and there is some days that if fell that she is dead exclamation!  She is 89 years old, was an accountant ( when to University when women  of that generation did not finish  elementary school exclamationShe was my mentor... she is my mentor but she does not know who I am nor does she recognize any of my siblings.  I do believe that she is holding on to my father as he is the only person she still knows or has a souvenir of....This is a disease that kills the spirit of the people around them....they are oblivious of what is going on but I remember her when she was full of live, joking & still try to find that in her... I think it has killed her ' soul' and it is killing my 'soul' because I fell so helpless to help her or my father.

Just felt like writing about it exclamation!

Sorry if I offend or when against any rules but LCB is part of me now
  • It's good to talk about what's going on so I'm sure you've not offended anyone.  Alzheimer's is hard for everyone.  I remember my grandpa once came out with his sword when I was visiting, saying there was a man sleeping on his couch-that was me.  I was just a teenage girl, no real threat.  His sword was from when he was in the army in 1918!  Luckily my grandmother woke up and calmed him down and got him back to bed.
All you can do is still love your mom...

  • loupom...your mom's 'soul' is fully there.  The Alzheimer may have made it difficult for your mom to express things to you as easily as she once did, but it definitely has not killed her soul.  Your mom's soul is ageless and untouchable...you gotta believe that.  Hang in there, and dont ever give up knowing that your mom's soul is alive and beaming.  : )

  • loupom, I am well aquainted with this dreaded disease. It took my Beloved Mother back in Oct 16th, 2006. To see a somewhat healthy woman become a mental wreck in just less then 8 months, is a staggering blow to any family member.

My prayers are with you at this time. I wish it could get better, but I know it won't.

  • Hi Loupom,

I am glad you came here to your LCB family to share your story and you have not offended anyone and certainly no rules!

You have to stay strong and never let it break your spirit. I know this seems easier said than done when it is such a painful thing to see. Your mom and mentor wants you to remember her as she was.

As our parents get older it is hard to see them become ill or not have the strength and grit they once had. It seems that this part of life can be cruel sometimes. You will carry on her legacy and hold on to every fond memory you have.

Be strong for your dad too. Talk about memories of growing up and good times that were had. Look at pictures and reminisce about happy moments you all have shared.

And in return we will be strong for you and be here for you. Never doubt that. Sending one great big hug your way.

  • Hi Loupom,

I have no experience of this terrible disease but I have heard about it from a friend.  It is the hardest thing to go through to not be recognized by someone you have known and loved all your life.

Try and think about the good and fun times you've shared over the years and they will make you smile and maybe help you get through this.

My thoughts are truly with you during this tough time.

  • I think everyone here feels with you. It's a terrible thing to see your dearest fall into oblivion like that. But as Blue said, just keep in mind how wonderful those past years were with your mom, and how inspired you were by her all your life. Just don't let these bad days cast a shadow over these good times, and you'll get over this situation in the best way you can!

And don't forget, we're all here for you!
