  • I recently got my drivers licensed renewed and i was asked if i wanted to be an organ donor. I have to admit i had to think a minute about it. And i thought if i can save a life after i am gone why not.

Is anyone an organ donor or do you have a family member that is and preferred they were not? I know some family members hate to think of their loved ones going through this even if it is after they die.

  • Lips,

I actually became an organ donor about 6 years ago, a friend of mine needed a heart transplant and it was situation that made me realize the importance of it. My parents were not to happy with it, but when you see how detrimental it is to someone else it is the ultimate gift. Its the gift of life. What good are my organs after death; give them to someone that still has a lifetime ahead of them.

  • Some people are superstitious , some people are ignorant and some just indifferent. And there is probably a 4th group of ppl who actually never thought of it.

with that said I have to admit I am not a donor. I gave blood several times, but thats about it.

  • I was at one time but after I'm gone they'd take one look at my organs and say WTH are we to do with these!! laugh_out_loud

I do think it's the ultimate gift and I'm all for it.

  • I'm not an organ donor, not really thought about it to be totally honest  - not really a subject that ever cropped up before.

  • I am one, but like Rosebud, they'd take one look and just say "Can't believe the dude lived this long like that"...LOL

But I also want to take a moment and thank those people who in the midst of their deepest grief and sadness, saw a light that they could help brighten by agreeing to donate their childs organs.  :'( :'(

That has to be the absolute WORST thing (Losing a child) and then turn around and say "Yes, let my childs death benefit others, take their organs and use them"  :'( :'(

They truly know the word "Sacrifice"  angel angel

  • I'd certainly give up all my organs, I wouldn't need them any more, would I? smiley They couldn't use my lungs though unless I quit smoking real soon.

  • I was thinking about it, I still haven't become a organ donor but I will soon.

  • I am a bit paranoid about registering as an organ donor, but I made quite clear to my closest that I am all for it, in case that something happens to me. If they disobey me, I said I will come back and haunt them as a poltergeist smiley

  • I was a donor then forgot to sign the back of my new license. It's one of those things that many of us don't give much thought to unless we know someone waiting for a transplant. I think it's a good thing to do and if it can save someone's life it's worth it.

One misconception is that people think they are too old. I heard a story of a liver being taken from an 86 year old woman. As long as you're generally healthy, age is no issue. I say be a donor and let the doctors decide what they can use.

  • Wow i thought age did matter when it came to donation organs. That is great age has no bearing because it means more organs are available.

Donating children's organs is a tough call and those parents should really be commended. Couldn't agree with you more on that Gene.

If i needed an organ and received one that saved my life i think i might be tempted to want to know the family and a little something about the person who donated it. If anything just to thank the family. But i am not sure if that is ever told.

    That

Actually Lips, that policy has changed. There used to be a concern that those who gave, would want to see the recipient live the life of their child. But that has not happened as far as I know, but instead has brought people of a shared grief/joy together in harmony.
  • I am a organ donor. If I can give someone extended life after I am gone I am all for it. Too many people die waiting on a list for a transplant than live getting a transplant. A friend of the family died 8 years ago waiting for a kidney transplant at the age of 38. If more people donated he like many others would be alive today.

  • I just have to add that Lips you really made me think about this...

  • When I think about it, I really can't think of a good reason why one shouldn't leave his organs to help others. Apart from religious reasons, there is no excuse really.
